College Grad Seeks Clinical Experience before Med SchoolWhat type of job are you looking for? I am seeking a job in a clinical setting where I can gain experience working aside medical professionals. I have interest in working with patients where I can learn and apply my knowledge. If this is not possible I am wiling to work in the neighboring community or with a health organization/ committee where I can be active in health matters. I wish to obtain a job after a graduate from College in May 2010. I would be available to start that summer, in June. The duration can be anything from the summer to a full academic year. What is your educational background? I attended Howard University in D.C as a biology major and transferred to Cornell University. At Cornell, my major was animal science; pre-med. In May 2010, I expect to graduate with my Bachelor of Science. I wish to take a year off before going to medical school so that I can travel and get clinical experience working in a hospital setting. What languages do you speak (and at what level)? I speak English. However I took Spanish for 3 years and speak it at a college level. What experience/skills/hobbies do you have? As an animal science major, I have extensive experience working with animals, both small and large. I have spend summers working at various local animal hospitals in both the D.C and N.Y area. I have had externships where I have worked on sheep and beef cattle farms where I have had the opportunity to help out in the administration of vaccinations, calving/lambing, daily feeding & cleaning etc. Despite my love for animals, I have interest in pursuing a career in human medicine. In the summer of 2009, I had an internship at SUNY Downstate Medical Hosptial/University, where I had the opportunity to work under a doctor in the School of Public Health researching endometrial cancer in women and the racial disparities that exist between black and white women, both foreign and US born. Currently I am working on my publication. I have extensive skills in writing/communication. I have served as n Vice President of the Wildlife Society at Cornell, a member of the Social Committee at the Ecology House, and have served as a Peer Mentor. In highschool I was a senior captain of the Women's Track Team and a member of the National Honor Society. I enjoy exercising, horseback riding, and organic cooking. What community service have you done? I am committed to serving in my local community. I had the opportunity to volunteer a summer at StonyBrook University's Summer Character Education & Service Learning Program. In the Summer of 2008, I volunteered at Doubleday Babcock Senior Center where I helped raise money through bake sales and helped the elderly with daily activities and meal distribution. Currently, I volunteer with First Congregationalist Church in Ithaca, NY teaching bible study to young children. I am also active in activities the church promotes, such as Habitat for Humanity and Ghana Night. What is the extent of your coursework? I have fulfilled all of my requirements to be pre-med. This includes: Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Math (statistics), English Composition In addition I have taken: Reproduction & Propagation, Endocrinology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Nutrition, Physics, and will take Genetics my last semester. What are your career expectations? I hope to attend an osteopathic medical school. Why do you wish to work/volunteer abroad? I have always had interest in going abroad. I feel that after I graduate, it will be the best time to venture off and explore the world. I wish to gain a unique experience, meet new people, while making a difference in the surrounding community. What do you have to offer? I am: determined and committed to whatever duty I set forth to take on friendly and am able to communicate well with others able to do basic work on the computer able to promote a safe environment and enforce rules and regulations patient and willing to learn Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why? I believe formal education is more valuabe. Anyone can gain skills to get a job done. However, one cannot go but so far until he/she has the groundwork learning. A formal education is sometimes needs for a person to get a full understanding how to operate and perform efficiently.
