Nursing / Computer Jobs

What type of job are you looking for?

Something that will utilize my many skills as a Registered Nurse (with a certification in Rehabilitation Nursing), a teacher, and a computer user that has designed and administered databases.

What nationality are you?

I am a US citizen.

What languages do you speak (and at what level)?

English with excellent writing and speaking skills. I read Spanish quite well but have trouble hearing it and speaking it but I keep trying!!

What country or area are you looking to work in and why?

Belize - I like what I have read about the climate and the country. However, I am open to other places as I would like to know more and find out more about other countries.

What countries have you worked in?

Only the US, in the states of Alaska, Utah, Arizona and Colorado.

What field do you currently work in?

I am currently a Night Charge Nurse on an Acute Rehabilitation Unit.

What fields have you worked in before?

I have taught Nursing.

I have done IT (Information Technology) for a small company.

I have designed and administered several database using MS Access and Paradox.

I have done HR (Human Resource) work such as processing new hires, explaining benefits and helping employees obtain them, writing job descriptions and posting ads of employment opportunities.

What qualifications do you hold?

I am licensed as an RN and have current BLS and ACLS and my CRRN. I have a BS in Nursing with a Psychology minor. I also have gerontology certification.

I am very adept with computers and have a combination of skills learned in the College setting as well as being self taught.

I taught nursing for 6 years and have taught in other situations and am skilled in teaching all ages as I was an Education Major before I changed to being a nurse.

I am an effective Public Speaker.

I learn new things quickly and enjoy learning new things, new skills.

I am a thinker, an analyzer and a doer.

Although I am an introvert, I do know how to extrovert myself when the situation calls for it.

I work well with people and have a management style that tries to bring the best out of those I manage and to coach them up rather than to kick them out! I believe in Policies and Fairness because one cannot function without the other.

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

I could not make a choice without having the specific situation stated because there are times when the formal education must be supreme and times when skills reign! However, if all government and accreditation agencies policies were abolished that require certain educational levels, I would favor skills as being the most valuable. Too often I have found people who are "book smart" not nearly as effective in accomplishing necessary tasks as people with skills are!!

Describe the benefits of working with others

I have never met a person that I didn't learn something from. It is working with others that we learn different ways, hopefully better ways, of doing things and that we are able to see situations and problems from different viewpoints and not just our own and that makes us open to new ideas and keeps us from myopic vision. I work very well as a team member because I have learned how to listen to others, to learn from others and not to think that my ideas and ways are what are the best. I work well with a team or alone.

Describe the benefits of working alone

I am and introvert by nature and since I am that means that I actually gain energy from being by myself. Working alone, for me, energizes me and allows me to work through problems and find solutions more quickly because my mouth does not keep up with my mind. Put another way if I don't have to communicate what I am doing/thinking to someone else as it is done, I can work faster although not necessarily smarter because, as I mentioned above, we can learn much from others.

What was your worst working experience?

My worst working experience was when I worked assembly lines where my physical body repeated the same actions over and over with little input from my mind and my mind had too much time to think of other things to do that I could not do because I was tied to that assembly line!!

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

People matter and relating with them positively ALWAYS brings better results than treating them negatively.

What unique skills do you have?

None - Even when we believe we are unique or can do something that is unique, over time we will discover there are others like us and others that can do whatever it is we do that we thought was unique! There are many things that I excel at but I am not one to brag but much prefer to just do.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

I had that while I was raising my children and my dream job now is being a grandmother BUT neither brings in a pay check so my dream job would be to use my skills, my knowledge, my experience to help others gain the skills, the health, the knowledge necessary to qualify for their dream jobs!

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

Nursing allows me to teach, to heal, to touch lives, to make a difference in this world. My computer work expands my mind, causes me to think logically, deductively to solve problems, and to create order out of chaos.

What are the least interesting aspects of your field?

The redundant paperwork that is required of nurses because of accrediting and governmental agencies. As for computers, sometimes data entry can very boring.

Why would I want to leave my present employment?

My work is redundant at times because I have been doing the same thing for a long time. The only thing that really changes is the patients. For that reason I am looking for something new and challenging. Also, I know the area I live in and would like to have a new area to explore!
