seeking job in Jewelry design, making and repairsWhat type of job are you looking for? I'm looking for a job in making or repairing jewelry. High end, costume, metal, plastic, stones. I'm able to repair and creat almost all types of jewelry. What nationality are you? I'm British, born in and trained in the UK What languages do you speak (and at what level)? I'm a native English speaker. What country or area are you looking to work in and why? Bermuda, I'm open to options with regards to where specifically within Bermuda. I'm planning on moving there with my partner as he's originally from Bermuda. What countries have you worked in? The UK What countries do you have a visa to work in? The UK What field do you currently work in? I currently design and make my own jewelry and do out work for other jewelers. This includes pearl stringing, ring re-sizing, smelting and casting metal, working with cast pieces, stone setting, chain repair, fine gold fusing. I also make commission for other jewellers as wel as the repair work. What fields have you worked in before? After graduating I have worked full time as a bench jeweler. During my studies I worked part time with a high end jewelery shop. What qualifications do you hold? I have a 3 year BA(hons) in jewellery design and making. I have since trained further at the bench to develop my skills. Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why? I think for jewelry making skills are more valuable than education. You can only learn so much through teaching, a lot of what a jeweler needs to know come through experience with the metal and other materials. Theory can only take you so far with a practical job. Describe the benefits of working with others Having other people to bounce ideas off and run thought by can be very useful. If your working on something entirely new and your not 100% percent confident about it, having another person opinion can really help. Describe the benefits of working alone Working alone you learn a lot about responsibility and management. As your not told when to work or how much to do you become good at making judgment calls with regards to time etc. What was your worst working experience? I worked for a jeweler once as an intern where all day I was threading beads. It wasn't stimulating or challenging work so I found it quite dull! I like to test myself with my work! What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career? Be organised! I have learnt that no matter how skilled you are or professional you are in other ways, without organisation you will be lost! What unique skills do you have? I'm a traditional jeweler so I think being able to fuse gold, string pearls, smelt metals and repair is fairly unique. What would you consider as your 'dream job'? I think working in an environment with a lot of challenges would be great. One day I'd like to do more designing as well as making. What are the most interesting aspects of your field? Working for people. Creating special unique commissions is rely interesting as you really get to know the people your working for and your often making a piece of jewelery which is very special to them. it's a beautiful process to be a part of. What are the least interesting aspects of your field? I think that I find all of it interesting! Maybe doing my tax returns at the end of the year is dull... And chasing people for unpaid invoices.
