PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU DO, AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE THIS EDUCATIONAL / CAREER GOAL AND HOW DO YOU PLAN TO USE THIS EDUCATION IN THE FUTURE?
I was born in a small Colorado town, and with the support of family and friends, raised with an appreciation for the values of a rural community. I have been described as energetic, passionate, personable and kind. I work well with diverse groups of people and believe that I can read and respond to people well. I adapt well to new situations and enjoy being challenged. I am a mountain girl and love all things outdoors, especially cross country skiing, running and hiking.
Nursing first sparked my interest on a study abroad trip during college. I spent months in developing countries such as India, Kenya and Vietnam. I was overwhelmed by the poverty and filth that much of the world’s population lives in. I was outraged with the inequalities present in our world. I realized that with some basic hygiene, vaccinations, and simple health care, much of these people’s suffering could be easily diminished. The defining moment when I decided to pursue nursing school came after the 2004 Asian Tsunami. I called the Red Cross to ask what I could do to help. They informed me that unless I had a medical background, all I could do to help would be to send money. I decided a career in nursing would provide the preparation I needed to take advantage of future opportunities to help others in a greater capacity.
I currently work as a registered nurse in the emergency room of a level III trauma center and at a ski resort medical clinic. Here I have the opportunity to be a calm, compassionate and competent presence for patients and families whom are scared, in pain and confused. I love that every day my job changes, every day I am challenged and everyday my knowledge base increases. I also appreciate that I am in a position to provide care to my neighbors and friends of our close-knit community.
I also volunteer as a nurse. I work at community health fairs, volunteer as medical personal for events and competitions and recently traveled to Guatemala on a medical mission trip.
In the future I see myself living in a small mountain town working in a community hospital or as a public health nurse. I want to help with the education and provision of holistic care and hope to combine my passion for healthcare, world health and the environment through medical trips abroad and infectious disease research.
