Jackie Okumu (68.39.212.238) -

What type of job are you looking for?

My passion is teaching. I have at least 6 years experience in nursing most of which has been spent in several aspects of nursing. I have worked as an ER which I love, worked in Psychiatry, Hospice and Medical Surgical. I am currently a clinical instructor for Licenced Practical Nurses. I am also working on a dual degree - Masters of Science in Nursing (Education/Leadership) and Masters in Health Care Administration. I expect to graduate December, 2009.

What nationality are you?

Kenyan

What languages do you speak (and at what level)?

English - Excellent

What country or area are you looking to work in and why?

Bostwana, I have been to Bostwana and I loved the country. I especially love what Prof Anabwana is doing with the Paedetrics. I did go on a tour at Princess Marina Hospital, and I feel I have sometihing to offer to the health care industry in Bostwana.

What countries have you worked in?

Kenya United States of America

What field do you currently work in?

I am currently working as a nurse educator/clinical instructor in a certificate nursing program. I do work part time as well as an emergency room nurse.

What fields have you worked in before?

Psychiatry Medical Surgical Hospice Long term care

What qualifications do you hold?

BSN MSN/MHA - expected to graduate in 12/2009 PALS/ACLS/BLS Proficiency in Cardiac Monitoring IV therapy

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

Both formal education and skills are valuable and are important in the health care industry. In order to acquire knowledge on diseases, diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, one needs formal education. Skills come in handy during bedside nursing. Skills to me are a practical version of the formal education. You read in the books how to carry out a procedure, and then you put the skills in practice when handling your patient.

Describe the benefits of working with others

Teamwork has always been a major driving force in the health care industry. Health care is best given in multidisciplinary team concept. As nurses, we bridge the gap between the doctors and the patients. We assist the doctors to provide the best care, and we also assist the patient to understand their care. We need the dieticians and the social workers on board. Without this partnership, care delivery will be compromised.

Describe the benefits of working alone

Working alone sometimes can be advantagious. It allows once to focus and strategize according to their pace. There is less confusion and less misinterpration of instructions. There is also less bureaucracy as there are less people to go through before a decision is made.

What was your worst working experience?

My worst working experience happened as a brand new nurse. I happened to be paired with a preceptor who had a racial problem. It can be uncomfortable being precepted with someone whom you are not compatible with. That was a very uncomfortable part of my nursing career.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

I have learnt that patience is a virtue. I have also learnt that no condtion is permanent and that all of us, irregardless of our pasts and situations, we all have something intricate to offer. Some lessons I learnt from psychiatric patients who had been written off. In life, listen more, you might just pick on a gold mine (this I was told by a 67 year old schizophrenic).

What unique skills do you have?

I am a team player. I always strive to better myself both professionally and personally. I have a niche of bringing workmates together and just making going to work a joy thing to do. I have hold a Pitman Certificate of 120 wpm in shorthand and 60 wpm in typing. I did work as an Administrative Assistant in Kenya before relocating to the states.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

My dream job will one that will combine my education and practical skills. I would love a position where I will be in position to disseminate the knowledge that I have. Nursing education and leadership is passion for me. Teaching nurses how to be nurses is fun.

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

The fact that I get to impact nurses in one way or another. I receive when they begin their first class in anatomy and physiology and until when they get ready to sit for their boards. I enjoy seeing the transformation. It gets better when you meet in health care facilities working as nurses. This comes with a great sense of satisfaction.

Wjat are the least interesting aspects of your field?

Loosing patients. It is hard to loose patients especially when they are still young. I also have to deal with the high attrition of nurses. With the current shortage, it is hard to hold onto good staff. It is also not very interesting when a student is educated on the fact that nursing is a passion, not a quick money making career. It is harder when you have to walk them through thinking about another career because nursing is not just their stronghold.

How soon can I report if offered a job?

The year 2010. I am currently finishing my coursework.

How can potential employers contact you?

Via email - J_Okumu@msn.com
