Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

This is a bit of a tricky question, a bit like asking which do you find more valuable : your arms or your legs? The formal education is like your legs, you would have difficulty getting anywhere without them (but it is not impossible!!). Experience and skills are like your arms, you use those to complete your tasks. Both are very valuable. As you can note from my resume, I value education. Education allows one to obtain and appropriately utilize skills. You needs skills to do the job for which you were educated.

Describe the benefits of working with others

-Sharing responsibilities -Sharing ideas, working through problems, finding solutions -Allows one to be part of a team -the enjoyment of being with others

Describe the benefits of working alone

-time to focus on a task, topic, goal -proceeding at one's own pace -idea development

What was your worst working experience?

I once worked with a physician that felt that working with a NP was a burden (his words) and was hostile in his manner when he was approached to collaborate on a patient. He was aware he would be working with NPs before he accepted the position, but he never seemed to adjust to us.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

Although we strive to do the very best, no one is infallible.

What unique skills do you have?

I communicate well with patients, families, students, staff.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

A job in patient care in which I had adequate time to provide for the health care needs of the patient, worked with students, and was involved in research.

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

I like the "putting together a puzzle" aspects of diagnosis.

What are the least interesting aspects of your field?

Charting!
