Below in information describing the research we did in Kenya, Africa about HIV/AIDS during my last teaching practicum there. We taught HIV/AiDS awareness to high school students and their community.
1) To understand the experiences of children and teachers in Kenyan schools as they undertake the negotiation of a child-to-child HIV/AIDS curriculum;
2) To understand the potential of photo hadithi as a process for transforming knowledge of HIV/AIDS and for empowering children and teachers to overcome stigmatization in communities.
3) To understand ways in which the knowledge about HIV/AIDS education of Canadian pre-service teachers is reshaped through their participation in 1 and 2 above

Course Description:
This course is designed for students who wish to gain an understanding of the complex nature of HIV/AIDS in diverse social - cultural contexts of the world of which they are apart. Emphasis will be placed on social-cultural and economic structures which increase vulnerability and risk of HIV/AIDS.
The students will examine the knowledge, explanatory models/theories for HIV, impact of HIV/AIDS, responses, obstacles and opportunities for prevention. The course will help students develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to assist them in implementing and advocating for a comprehensive approach to HIV/AIDS prevention in their respective contexts. It should interest pre-service teachers, adult educators, development studies majors, nurses, and other health care professionals, as well as other students who are interested in developing a first voice perspective on global health-related issues.
Students will learn through face-to-face class sessions, readings, direct experiences and/or web-based contact with AIDS research community and actions group partners in Canada and Internationally. Students will share reflections of what they learn through weekly postings on the internet using Blackboard TM.
