English teacher would like to teach in Cambodia

What type of job are you looking for?

English teaching position in Cambodia.

What nationality are you?

British

What languages do you speak (and at what level)?

English- native Japanese- conversational Chinese- beginner

What country or area are you looking to work in and why?

Cambodia. Having taught English in other countries, I now see Cambodia as the next step in my ESL career. I have also been to Cambodia on vacation. I was touched by the kindness and generosity of the people, especially after what the country had been through. I therefore see a teaching opportunity in Cambodia as a way of giving something back to the people.

What countries have you worked in?

Japan, Thailand, China.

What countries do you have a visa to work in?

Currently a Chinese z visa. Due to expire later this year. Also a permanent residency visa for Japan.

What field do you currently work in?

Education. I teach English to university students in Guangzhou, China.

What fields have you worked in before?

I have been an English teacher for 7 years. I taught ESL at language centers, public schools and privately.

What qualifications do you hold?

Bachelors

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

I would consider both of equal value. Without a formal education one is unprepared to face the challenges of life, eg. career opportunities. Without the acquisition of skills one cannot progress in life. Formal education is the foundation or bedrock of one's life, while skills enables one to build on this foundation. You cannot have one without the other.

Describe the benefits of working with others

Working with others helps to build good interpersonal relations and strengthens the importance of teamwork. It also gives you the chance to exchange ideas.

Describe the benefits of working alone

Working alone forces you to think on your feet and to be more intuitive. Without the help of others you are more likely to take the initiative.

What was your worst working experience?

When I worked at a cram school in Japan. The parents had forced their children, junior high school students, to attend classes. The students were therefore unenthusiastic and sometimes even disrespectful. The cram school was also disorganized and badly run.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

To keep a positive outlook even when things are not going your way. If at first you do not succeed, try and try again. If you are going to shoot, you may as well shoot for the stars. More often than not you'll land in the mud. It is important to keep shooting for the stars until you finally get there. I also believe it is vital that you listen to the advice and council of others, eg. your work colleagues and friends. But ultimately you are responsible for the decisions you make and the path that your life takes.

What unique skills do you have?

Responsible and self-motivated in carrying out given tasks.

Energetic and motivating language instructor with proven ability to effectively plan and organize student classes.

Accustomed to developing a curriculum for students, which takes into account not only their linguistic competence, but also their learning style, general communicative competence, personality and cultural background.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

To be the owner or manager of an English language school.

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

Watching students making progress and gaining confidence.

What are the least interesting aspects of your field?

Unmotivated or disrespectful students. Disorganized and badly run language institutions.

Please replace this with a question of your own

A job or even your career does not define who you are. Your life's mission defines who you really are. Every question one must ask oneself is "What is my life's mission?" I believe I'm on my way to answering this question for myself.

How can potential employers contact you?
