Teaching

What type of job are you looking for?

Teaching in an elementary school. Any Grade level between fourth and sixth would be great.

What nationality are you?

St. Lucian

What languages do you speak (and at what level)?

Only English

What country or area are you looking to work in and why?

I am looking to work in the Caribbean. I familiar with the Caribbean environment and believe that the education system of most Caribbean countries share some similarities. Therefore, it would be a bit easier to for me to adapt in any Caribbean school if given the opportunity.

What countries have you worked in?

Only St. Lucia but I am willing to work elsewhere.

What countries do you have a visa to work in?

None. But looking for opportunities where this could be possible.

What field do you currently work in?

I work as a school teacher at an elementary school. I teach sixth graders. I have also taught third, forth and fifth grade. I teach all subjects including Mathematics, English, Social Studies and Science; therefore I think I will be able to adapt well to any curriculum for the grades mentioned previously.

What fields have you worked in before?

I have worked in education only but willing to work in any other field as long as I meet the requirements. I am open-minded and willing to accept challenges.

What qualifications do you hold?

Teaching Certificate from Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (1997-1999); Bachelor's Degree in Education and Educational Administration from UWI(2005-2008); Masters of Arts Degree in New Literacies in Education from University of Sheffield Uk (2009-2011:Second year Postgraduate school).

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

I believe that both formal education and skills are valuable. Formal education is necessary for the aquisition of knowlegde. As the saying goes 'knowledge is power'. In the same way skills are also important because they are needed for jobs that require one's expertise. I believe without knowledge and skills a job cannot be done effectively. The two go hand in hand.

Describe the benefits of working with others

I have learnt that "No man is an island". Working with others can be very beneficial. First of all it brings new ideas and experiences to the table. Through sharing and communicating, an idea that worked for my colleague may very well work for me. I can learn new ways of doing things through working with others. Working with others also fosters team spirit, collegiality and collaboration. Therefore problems faced in the work environment may become easy to solve. Many solutions can be presented to solving problems in different ways thus limiting 'one-way thinking' or unilateral decision making. Ideas that are implemented can benefit almost everyone. There is a sense of belonging. It brings positive synergy to the group and motivates members to work towards desired goals. It enhances the culture and ethos of the work environment and builds members' confidence.

Describe the benefits of working alone

In working alone time is not wasted in making decisions since one person does the thinking.Decisons are made quicker as an individual. It is likely that less resources are used since a person works alone. It develops a deeper sense of individual responsibilty.

What was your worst working experience?

One day one of my students fell ill in class and I had to call the ambulance. The principal was out of school that day and because of this I felt very bad about the situation. I accompanied the child on the ambulance and it was my first time anyway. The rest of the students remained in class praying for their classmate. It was an awful experience to see the sick child and also to see my students praying in sadness or their friend.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

The teaching/learning process is not all about serious work. We need to socialize with our students; get to know them and about them.Know what they like and dislike as well as what goes on in the home. Learning should be fun for children and if it is children will be more willing to learn.

What unique skills do you have?

None but willing to learn if given the opportunity.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

My 'dream job' is being the Prime Minister of my country.

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

Spending time with kids away from the formal classroom, for e.g. going out on tours and just relaxing with the children helps me to see them socialize in a different setting. Also, attending conferences where I can learn something educational/ new developments in education.

What are the least interesting aspects of your field?

Writing daily lesson plans. Also, doing test analysis on computerised programs.
