Mental health- Bernadette General surgical/ theatre/day surgery/ recovery- Hugh

What fields have you worked in before?

Hugh- respiratory, cardiac surgery, general surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, infection control, day surgery, theatre, recovery, Bernadette- acute mental health, long term care, community mental health

What qualifications do you hold?

Bernadette- RCN bachelor of nursing completed 2002, post graduate certificate mental health 2003 Hugh- RGON 1984, Bachelor of nursing 1995, certificate in infection control 2004,

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

Both are important theory without practice is pointless and practice without knowledge can be dangerous or unsafe

Describe the benefits of working with others

Working together using each other's skills & experience. Support each other in decision making, finding solutions, completing tasks and encouraging one another

Describe the benefits of working alone

Less interruptions, able to concentrate and interact on a personal level with clients.

What was your worst working experience?

Hugh- Working a 16hr shift Bernadette- working with a highly volatile young male

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

Bernadette- the importance of genuinely caring for people Hugh- taking time to listen to people & letting them express their concerns or anxiety

What unique skills do you have?

Bernadette- I'm a great team participant, get on well with my colleagues, skilled communicator/ listener, digging deep to find the real issues & am able to build rapport & therapeutic relationship with a wide range of people Hugh- broad nursing experience & skills, interactive people skills- people of all ages/ cultures, leadership & educational skills

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

Bernadette- A nursing job where I really feel like I'm making a difference in being able to help & add into the lives of those I work with. Hugh- Being able to see peoples lives change for the better & doing whatever it takes to achieve this

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

Bernadette- Mental health- getting to know people and being able to relate to them and address the issues that relate to their illness. The different conditions interest me. Problem solving in a multi-disciplinary setting Hugh- Hearing of patients who have recovered & are able to function again without pain.

What are the least interesting aspects of your field?

Bernadette- clients who are non responsive to treatment Hugh- Poor outcomes or unfortunate diagnoses post procedures/ biopsies
