Forum Post

Jacqueline de Klerk

Santa Marta/Cartegena

What type of job are you looking for?

I am looking for an English teaching job, preferably one-one teaching to adults, conversation

What nationality are you?

South African

What languages do you speak (and at what level)?

English (native) Spanish (basic- but I am learning at the moment) Afrikaans (intermediate) Czech (basic) Korean (reading and writing)

What country or area are you looking to work in and why?

I am looking for a job in Colombia in Santa Marta or Cartegena. I have wanted to go to South America for many years now, and now I have the funds to get me there. I would like to improve my Spanish and salsa skills. I am also interested in experiencing the Colombian culture.

What countries have you worked in?

I worked in the Czech Republic for 1.5 years. I taught conversational English to professionals at a bank. Last year I taught English at an elementary school in South Korea.

What countries do you have a visa to work in?

I am able to obtain a work visa for Colombia, and most countries in South America.

What field do you currently work in?

Private English lessons

What fields have you worked in before?

I have worked in language and teaching fields. I have also worked in a book shop.

What qualifications do you hold?

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology and Biochemistry. I also have a Postgraduate diploma in Enterprise Management.

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

Education is more valuable than skills. Without some formal education, it is difficult to obtain skills and keep them. Education enables one to develop their thinking, analytical and solving skills to great levels.

Describe the benefits of working with others

When I work with other people I am able to give and receive knowledge and skills. I learn patience and tolerance and I have the opportunity to empathize with other people. I can develop good interpersonal skills and I can learn more about the other person’s perspective and adapt my ways to accommodate our differences. Listening skills can also be improved and patience can be developed with those people who I struggle to communicate with due to language barriers. I also have the opportunity to improve my Spanish.

Describe the benefits of working alone

I am able to work faster and independently, meaning that I can possibly get more work done compared to working with someone who doesn't speak English that well. I can do things my way, and I won't have to wait for someone to finish their part so I can continue with mine.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

If you have patience, anything is possible.

What unique skills do you have?

I have an optimistic outlook on life and I try to maintain a positive attitude, even amidst negativity. My work experience and travel abroad reflects my ability to cope with and adjust well to new and unfamiliar environments. I am pro-active and motivated to achieve my goals and I will do my utmost best to attain what I set out to do.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

Anything to do with the beach, the sea, outside in the sun!

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

The people I have met have had a huge impact on my life. It's great that I am able to travel the world teaching English-I am exposed to so many weird and wonderful cultures. Traveling and living in foreign countries has opened up my mind- that what I know is not always the "right"way. There are many different ways of living, eating and praying.

What are the least interesting aspects of your field?

Trying to find a job!

What will you gain from living in Colombia? What will Colombians gain?

I will be able to speak Spanish fluently, so I will then be able to get jobs in other fields (tour guiding, translator) I will have the opportunity to share my South African culture and skills with the Colombians I come in contact with. By teaching English, I can open up more opportunities for my students.
