I'm looking for a job that utilizes my skills, knowledge and experience as a Mental Health Counselor, preferably with children, youth and families. What nationality are you? I am a citizen of the Dutch Caribbean, as such, my nationality is Dutch. What languages do you speak (and at what level)? I speak: English fluently, Dutch, Spanish (conversational) What country or area are you looking to work in and why? I'm interested in work on Dominica; my fiance is a native of Dominica and has plans to move back to his homeland in the near future. What countries have you worked in? I've worked in the U.S.A. and the Dutch Caribbean. If your work involves traveling, are you willing to travel ? Yes, definitely. What field do you currently work in? I currently work in the field of Mental Health. What fields have you worked in before? I've worked as an Elementary & Secondary School Counselor, I've done Crisis Counseling with Families in the Florida Health Care system and I've worked in Psychiatric Care, just to name a few. What qualifications do you hold? Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology and my latest certification as an HIV/AIDS Counselor. Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why? Both are equally important. Formal education gives the added knowledge to enhance the skills that one may pick up along the roads of life. Describe the benefits of working with others Working with others broadens minds and perspectives as well as keeps attitudes in check. Describe the benefits of working with youngsters Working with youngsters gives you the opportunity to influence behavior and mentality at an early stage as well as teaching parents more positive ways for parenting. Are you involved in any volunteer services? Yes, I am a member of PEACE IS Foundation which is focused on reducing aggression and violence among school aged children as well as Girl Power, which focuses on working with teenage girls to enhance self esteem and teach decision making skills. What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career? To respect each person as an individual and to develop and maintain a non-judgmental attitude when working with others, be they clients or colleagues. What unique skills do you have? Very perceptive and a great listener. What would you consider as your 'dream job'? Would love working with the family court system in the best interest of children or working with the child protective services to decrease/eliminate child abuse and neglect. What do you find interesting in your field? Being able to help a client connect mentally and emotionally to the "why" of their behavior and seeing the client move towards healing. What is the least interesting aspect of your field? When a client fails to thrive in the process. Do you believe you can contribute positively to Dominica? Definitely. I believe that by investing time, care and treatment into the youngsters of the island, the quality of life can be improved, not just for the youngers but also the adult population.
