Nursing job opportunities in the DR

What type of job are you looking for?

I am looking for a nursing job where I can be in constant contact with the Dominican people to learn as much from them as they will be learning from me. I would love to learn about medicine and nursing practices from a different perscpective. I want to assimilate into their culture as much as possible without losing my own.

What nationality are you?

I am American born from a Mexican mother and Black American father. I absolutely embrace and love both cultures and identify with both immensely.

What languages do you speak (and at what level)?

I speak both Spanish and English fluently at university level or higher.

What country or area are you looking to work in and why?

I recently returned from the Dominical Republic and fell in love with the people, their culture and their country. Their way of life is so simple and full of love, life and happiness. I would like to move there for at least a year and experience life to the fullest as they seem to do so effortlessly.

What countries have you worked in?

I have only worked in the USA but I plan to work in as many countries as I can in my young adult life.

Which countries would you apply for a visa to work in?

The Dominican Republic, anywhere in the continent of South America, Africa, Europe or Australia. I would like Canada, India and Japan.

What field do you currently work in?

I am a registered nurse. I work in healthcare but wouldn't mind teaching english, or working in hospitality for a year. Any I am looking for rewarding work that will leave me feeling fulfilled and that will allow me to be with and learn a great deal from people of that culture.

What fields have you worked in before?

In college and high school I worked as a waitress. I have experience in secretarial work and as a Registered Nurse.

What qualifications do you hold?

I have a Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology and a degree and Registered Nursing.

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

I consider both forms of education equally valuable. Skills are invaluable but very dangerous without the proper knowledge of how and why you are doing things. Formal education affords you the discipline and deeper level of understanding necessary to be able to be the best at what you do. Conversely, even with all the knowledge in the world, if you cannot apply the skills, the knowledge is close to useless. They are both equally important.

Describe the benefits of working with others

Working with other teaches you how to relate with the outside world. Working with others forces you to learn to see life and situations from another's perspective. We are a world of people experiencing and processing life's situations differently. Working with others well and learning the importance of teamwork is the only way to truly understand how valuable people are and how much we really need one another to live a full and prosperous life.

Describe the benefits of working alone

The benefit to working alone are that you don't have to answer to anyone but yourself. You are responsible for your own work and must rely soley on your own skills. Working alone can really expose you weakness which affords you the opportunity to strengthen yourself.

What was your worst working experience?

My worst working experience was working at a clinic where non-medical professionals were trying to control the practice and making decisions that were completely outside of their scope. This was very unfortunate because the patients that we cared for were severely effected when the majority of their medical providers left pursuing other job opportunities.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your job experiences?

The most important lesson that I have learned throughout my job experiences is that no matter how much you think you know, you could always learn more. One must never rest on their laurels because just when you get comfortable, something or someone will challenge your knowledge and put your skills to the test. We must always continue to be open to learning and changing our ideas and beliefs when the situation calls for it.

What unique skills do you have?

I type at least 100 words per minute, I read and write at an advanced level, I am a registered nurse which gives me life saving skills, CPR ceritfication, and I am bilingual.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

My dream job would be to travel the world offering ways for people to be healthier physically, mentally and spiritually. Maybe being a medicine woman in the most rural areas of the world and traveling all over the world bring happiness to all those that I come in contact with.

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

The most interesting aspects of my field are that there is always room for growth, change and endless opportunities to help people to be better for themselves and to themselves.

Being a Black and Mexican woman, how do you deal with adversity?

Adversity is everywhere. Discrimination about skin color, sex, sexual orientation, eye color, religious preference, etc. The only way to deal with adversity, is to face it head on and realize that obstacles of any kind are to be overcome with grace, love, understand, and kindness.

How long of a commitment are you willing to give any international organization that hires you?

I am willing to give at the very least a year. If the experience is a positive one, more than a year is a definite possibility.
