Educational Assistant/Autism Intervenor

Teaching English as a second language and/ or teaching Autistic children. My experience also encompasses teaching children that struggle with conventional teaching methods.

I am currently employed as and Educational Assistant in a Canadian Catholic Separate School educating students in grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. All of these children are exceptional learners that require alternate methods to develop their potential. I take great pride and responsibility in the teaching methods I extend to these children. I have over 10 years experience with exceptional students.

Spanish, currently learning and I am able to communicate in Spanish briefly.

What country or area are you looking to work in and why?

Dominican Republic

I have travelled to the country since 1990 and have a connection to the culture and people. I find the culture very similar to my own. I am comfortable and feel I am home when I am in the Dominican Republic.

I have completed various workshops and lessons that have qualified me to work with exceptional students that have been diagnosed with various learning disabilities up to and including my Level 1 Certification as an Autism Intervener.

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

I believe one should have both although there is no educational replacement for skills an individual may have been blessed with. Many individuals possess the natural ability to perform certain duties because they are gifted in a manner that comes with experience and the grace of God.

Describe the benefits of working with others.

Working with others creates an invaluable purpose in my life. To help and guide a student, to experience the wonder and gratification a student feels when they are truly understood and encouraged to succeed, to be a part of their learning journey, to be a part of their development in education, emotion, spiritual and physical is the ultimate source of fulfillment in my life.

Describe the benefits of working alone

Sometimes I plan lessons alone, although the time alone is usually when I am not working. This is time spent on reflection and planning strategies and possibly investigating alternate methods to introduce to a student.

What was your worst working experience?

I believe my worst working experience is when I witnessed a co worker mistreating a student.

The most important lesson I have learned throughout my career is that everyone is capable of learning and that in the process they have taught me the most valuable lesson of all.

Love conquers all.

What unique skills do you have?

My skills include, patience, common sense, ability to learn, understanding, compassion, listen well, speak well, I am able to work alone or in a team.

I have my standard CPR- first aid certification-

I have raised two children with the morals and standards to enable them to be successful university graduates. My skill as a mother has enabled my expertise as an educator to flourish.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

My dream job would be to extend myself to the children that require the assistance to be successful with their lives in the Dominican Republic. I am willing to work in the Dominican Republic during the school year months and other times as required by the students needs. I have a home in Canada and do not intend to abandon it. My hope is to extend my home as part of the learning experience for a child so they can experience Canada as well.
