Seeking to work as a nurse in Quito

Ecuador - Nurse Jobs

Seeking to work as a nurse in Quito

Does anyone have any information regarding the transition from being a nurse in the United States to Ecuador?

I am particularly interested in community health, but flexible and simply hope to acquire a position as a nurse somewhere... :)

Thank you!

Susana

I am interested in similar information, and this site is the most help I have been able to find, though not as informative as I would like. www.jobzing.com /ecuador/nursing-jobs/

I am not looking to go to Ecuador for at least five years, (I am only knocking off my pre-requisites for nursing at my college), but please e-mail me if this information was helpful, or if you might be willing to share what you may learn. Good luck! =)

"Nursing in Ecuador"

I too am looking to nurse in Ecuador. I looked up a missionary hospital in Quito that is looking into providing best care to the Ecuatorianos despite their level of social status and ability to pay. This hospital has ties to Canada where it is helped in funding through worldwide donations. The lady I wrote an e-mail to said that it is possible for me to work there, however, only if I learn to speak Spanish rather fluently so that I may better communicate with Patients and relay information the doctor has said.

Unfortunately, I don't speak much spanish. I understand about 50% of what is said. My husband is from Ecuador and we are looking to live there just outside the city in Cumbaya. So I was thinking USFQ might be a good option too. There might be either good nurse teaching opportunities or opportunities at their clinic. The Univsidad de San Fransico de Quito is considered a very important and pivotal university in South America. Their education is accepted worldwide and many expats come to study there on exchange. There is a numerous body of English-speaking people there, as well as many Ecuatorianos that come from well-to-do families and are usually well-versed in several languages. Tuition at the University is approximately $8, 000 USD per year plus books...so you may see why this would be the case. The professors at USFQ make an average of $3000/mo USD. You need a masters or doctorate level to get this pay. But chances are you can still get a fairly nice job. No, you will not make as much as in your home country, but keep in mind that cost of living is a lot less in Ecuador.

Also, if looking for a job as a nurse...sometimes the best thing to do is just go there and apply. While looking for a good job, keep in mind that you can easily find a job teaching english to pay the necessities of life until you can find that better job. You can live modestly in Ecuador on $250-$400 a month. The average english teacher is paid about $5/h and works an average of 20 hours a week. That gives you $400/wk.

Cheers and good luck! I hope you well on your endeavor. I'm sure you'll find what you are looking for, as will I.

Quito, Ecuador
Thank author of this post/comment"Nursing in Quito"

I am an American and have been working in quito as a nurse for the last 8 months. I arrived in quito after i took the boards in the states last summer, translated my resume and shopped it around to most of the larger hospitals here. Fortunately one of them offered me a contract and i have been working for them ever since.

If you are looking for a volunteer position there are a million ways that you can get a job whether it be in hospitals, clinics or doctors offices. If you are looking for paid work it is a bit trickier and requires an institution agreeing to help you acquire the work visa. Either way, you will need to have a fairly good grasp of the spanish language as a number of them require you to take entrance exams that are of course in spanish.

I certainly encourage you to come down and not expect to have anything set up before you arrive. As Rebecca said you will have the most luck if you simply show up in human resource departments asking for a job. My word for ecuador is "persistance" and I believe if you are willing to be, whatever you are looking for down here you can arrange!

Good luck :)
