 July 2003 {Still Conti), Research Associate at Indian Lac Research Institute (ICAR), Namkum, Ranchi, JHARKHAND.

Project Title: Evaluation of Bio-control Agents and Bio-rational Approaches for

the Management of Lac Insect Predators.

PROJECT INVESTIGATOR: * Dr. A. Bhattacharya (Principal Scientist)

* Dr. A. K. Jaiswal (Senior Scientist)

* Dr. A. V. N. Paul (National Fellow &

Principal Scientist)

PROJECT SUMMARY

• Lac insect associated fauna endowed with rare event of polytrophic food chain always been vulnerable to insect predator attack as the culture is being performed under natural condition & the primary predators associated with lac insects are very often found to devastate the various crops. There are four species of insect predators namely Eublemma amabilis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Pseudohypatopa (Holcocera) pulverea (Lepidoptera: Blastobasidae), Chrysopa madestes & C. lacciperda (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) and about 40 species of primary and secondary parasitoids reported as associated biota. Out of all, the two key lepidopteran predators E.amabilis & P. pulverea are reported to cause serious damage to lac crop. Use of pesticides to control these predators may no longer be feasible as lac is being used in various industries connected with food processing, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, dyeing etc. Hence the project on bio-intensive pest management utilising bio-control agents, bio-rational approaches is proposed with the main objectives:

1. To select suitable egg parasitoids of the lac insect predators & determine the dose & time of release of potent Trichogrammatid/& other egg parasitoids for management of lepidopteran predators.

Adult Trichogramma wasp mounted on microscope slide

2. Evaluation of different Bacillus thuringenesis formulations against the lac insect predators.

3. Evaluation of other potent bio-control agents the lepidopteran predators.

4. Exploration of semio-chemical interactions between lac resin waxes honeydew, haemolymph, predator by-products & associated biota.

5. Integration of biological control with other biorational approaches for management of lac insect predators.

Application of Bacillus thuringiensis on lac culture proved to be highly effective for

management of the lepidopteran predators

Project Title: Lac Productivity Rating of Different Lac Insects on Conventional & Promising

Host Plants.

PROJECT INVESTIGATOR: * Mr. Y. D. Mishra (Senior Scientist)

* Dr. S. N. Sushil (Scientist)

PROJECT SUMMARY

• Although 28 stocks of lac insects have been collected from Jharkhand, West Bengal, Orissa, Chattisgarh, NEH & Karnataka were maintained at ILRI Farm after accessioning on the respective hosts and studied for

• Morphological & Biological Characterisation.

• Identification of Lac productivity linked parameters, genetic variation & character correlation

• Lac Productivity on conventional hosts, Palas, Ber & Kusum along with development of productivity models on them

• Lac Productivity of various stocks at Ranchi (Jharkhand) & Chakidih (Orrisa)

• Identification of productive breeds of lac insect.

The summaries of findings have been given below:

• All the 28 collected lac insect stocks could be grouped in to 6 species, viz., Kerria ebranchiata, K. chamberlini, K. lacca, K. nagoliensis, K. chinensis & K. sharda (Mishra & Sushil) has been reported as new trivoltine species.

• On the basis of biological & breeding evidences four species could be synonymised with K.lacca has been resolved by designing kusmi as Kerria nagoliensis& rangeeni as Kerria lacca separately.

• Density of settlement, initial mortality, sex-ratio, survival at crop maturity, live & dry cell weight, lac resin per female and life period have been identified as important lac insect character linked with lac productivity.

• The importance of productivity linked characters was found to vary from species to species of lac insects and host plants.

• Linear multiple regression models have been developed for assessing lac productivity on conventional hosts, Palas, Ber &Kusum.

• Most promising lac hosts viz., Flemingia macrophylla, Albizzia lucida, Albizzia saman & Acacia auriculiformis have shown high intra specific variability in their susceptibility to lac insects.

• K. nagoliensis was found to be most important productive breed on kusum & Ber at Ranchi and Chakidih as well as on flemingia macrophylla at Ranchi.

• K. lacca proved to be the only suitable species for palas.

• K.chinensis was found to be highly productive on Kydia which was almost at par with that of K. nagoliensis on kusum.

• K.sharda the trivoltine lac insect species was found suitable only for its native locality, Eastern Ghats of Orissa.

• Four lac insect stocks of k. nagoliensis were selected for their high productivity on conventional hosts.

• Two productive breeds of K. lacca were found most promising on palas.

From the evidences presented herein, it can safely be concluded that several species proposed from Indian sub-continent do not actually occupy the status of separate species but stand at lower taxonomic status under species of regional importance. Amongst the productivity linked parameters of lac insects, density of settlement, resin output per female, survival at sexual maturity and life period are very important for improvement of lac insects through conventional breeding approaches. Intra-specific variation in lac insect susceptibility of lac host species have greater impact on various productivity linked attributes which may be considered for evolving good host plant variety for increased productivity. Hence, various lines of work emerged from the present study for further increasing the productivity of lac insects.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC RELEVANCE EXPECTED FROM THE PROJECT

• Lac is a unique natural material/commodity and needs to be preserved & fostered for its prosperity. India is a key player in the world lac production & trade, which confers it a social responsibility for maintaining and strengthening lac as a resource. Presently lac and lac based products are contributing largely as a foreign exchange earner for the country and being exported to about 100 foreign countries.

The bio-rational approaches would yield a comprehensive package of practices which will help in the reduction and use of harmful pesticides viz., endosulfan, dichlorovos etc., which are being used at present for management of the lac insect predators

Lac cultivation provides livelihood to millions of tribals inhabiting eastern and central India, thereby has the potential of improving the socio-economic conditions of the weaker sections of the society.

Since the methods are easy, compatible and eco-friendly, they will have wide social acceptance. Simultaneously lac based products, which are being utilised in the food, dyeing, cosmetics, fruit, confectioneries etc. industries in large quantities, will have greater acceptability in the nation and international markets.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING/EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

• One week training on APPLICATION OF BIO-INFORMATICS from BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, Mesra, Ranchi, JHARKHAND.

• Three years & six month training on TRANSFER OF LAC TECHNOLOGIES TO FARMERS FIELD from INDIAN LAC RESEARCH INSTITUTE (ICAR), Namkum, Ranchi, JHARKHAND.
