Heavy equipment manufacturing Import and export What qualifications do you hold? MBA specialising in Finance BA Hons in Marketing and Management Diploma in Public Administration Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why? I think a balance between both is good however hands on experience is essential to understand how the world really works. I think a proven business track record is preferable to a long list of educational qualifications. Describe the benefits of working with others I think when working in an overseas country a lot of benefit can be gained from working with good local staff. This includes the hard issues of business ideas but also knowledge of the softer issues in terms of cultural nuances. Describe the benefits of working alone I guess the main benefit is that you can suit your own time frames and your own style of working. However, I think ideally it is always preferable to lead or be part of a team. What was your worst working experience? In terms of pressure it was when a large scale fan failed its commissioning in Taiwan. The fan was for a steel plant and every minute the steel line was down the Client was losing money. Understandably the Client was very upset and I had to work almost continuously for 72 hours to help solve the problem. The commissioning engineer was French and spoke no English. I could speak a little French and a little Mandarin so translation was a big issue. However once complete and the problem solved I felt very proud of my contribution What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career? That people count and the respect, understanding and civility both internally and externally are very important attributes. What unique skills do you have? I am told that I have very strong people skills and that I am very culturally adaptable. I am also extremely resilient. What would you consider as your 'dream job'? To work in senior management position in a multi-national company. What are the most interesting aspects of your field? Engineering consultancy is a very competitive business and therefore it was very interesting to strategise both on how to move to higher margins and how to differentiate from competitors. What are the least interesting aspects of your field? Contract negotiations often drag on for too long and there is a tendency for projects to be slowed due to slow authority approval processes.
