What countries have you worked in?

England

What field do you currently work in?

Minor illness Walk in Centre- here i run a wound care clinic, participate in the learning and teaching of junior colleagues and assess some minor illnesess such as urinary tract infections, sore throats, ear infections and eye infections. I also issue emergency contraception and assess blocked ears.

DipHE Nursing studies (adult) currently about to finish BiMedSci Nursing studies also have 10 GCSE's all grade b-c

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

Both. I feel that it is always good to have some education to enable you to link theory to practice and learn important things such as background to nursing, nursing models, anatomy and physiology. I feel that once you have put your theory to practice you learn the skill and are constantly improving and building upon these skills. In order to keep up to date with theory and practice, i feel it is nessessary to have some further education.

Describe the benefits of working with others

working as part of a team offers Support, learning from each other, communication, time management, sharing knowledge, range of ability and team spirit.

Describe the benefits of working alone

I feel that the benefits of working alone are Control, self satisfaction, decision making, using and descovering your own skills and ability and trust

What was your worst working experience?

My worst working experience was when i was a newly qualified staff nurse working on a busy surgical ward. We were short staffed which increased our workload, thus, more responsibility for each nurse. I hadn't recieved my NMC PIN number so was unable to administer medicines alone, this also increased responsibility for myself- to ensure correct policy was followed and was supervised and for the countersigning nurse who already had a large workload. I overcame this experience and learnt from it after reflection. I overcame it by organising myself and using my time management skills and delegating some of the workload to a junior colleague such as basic nursing care and vital signs, i made myself a list of things to do and prioritised the tasks. I learnt that teamwork, prioritising care and delegation are vital when in any ward environment. I am glad i experienced this situation so early into my career.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

The most important lesson i learnt was from the above experience and that in order for effective nursing you must work together as a team, have good communication skills, prioritise care, delegate effectively and have good organisation and time management skills.

What unique skills do you have?

As well as communication, time management, team work, prioritising and delegation, i also posess further skills such as wound management, advanced clinical skills such as chest examination, ear examination and throat examination and am able to assess some minor illness and successfully manage these illnesess. I also have other skills such as setting up and maintaining syringe drivers, phlebotomy, continance care and teaching skills.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

My dream job would be in nursing. I am dedicated to the nursing profession and would be happy in any position as long as it involves nursing. My ideal job is to work with adults either in the community or a clinic environment, however i would be happy to work in a ward environment. My ambition is to eventually become a nurse practitioner and then nurse lecturer.

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

The most interesting aspect of my current role is running the wound care clinic. I love this aspect of my current role as this is one of my strong intrests, it includes both short and long term patients and the teaching of junior members of staff. It enables me to use my problem solving skills and i enjoy the continuity of care when long term patients are attending. Another interesting aspect of my current role is seeing something new everyday.

Wjat are the least interesting aspects of your field?

There are no parts of my current role that i find unintresting, however one of the disadvantages of my role is that a lot of the time you work by yourself and also looking at a computer for most of the day.

Why should we offer you a position?

I am an intellegent, hardworking, honest, reliable and trustworthy individual who loves to work in a team and meet new people. I enjoy a challenge and have a keen eye for detail. I am sociable, a good communicator and honestly dedicated to the nursing profession.
