MathematicsWhat type of job are you looking for? I am looking for an overseas teaching job for secondary mathematics. What languages do you speak (and at what level)? I speak English and Filipino. What State are you looking to work in and why? I want to work overseas because it will provide me an opportunity to hone my professional and personal skills more than when I stay in my own country. This is because getting out of my country will require me to step out of my comfort zone and live independently. I have chosen Guam because of its similarity with the Philippines - physically and culturally. What field do you currently work in? I am currently working in an academic institution in the Philippines, where I teach secondary mathematics. What fields have you worked in before? I have been working for four years now, and for these years I have always been in the academic field. What qualifications do you hold? I am a graduate of Secondary Education major in Mathematics. I graduated Cum Laude in 2007. My four years of working experience involves being a classroom teacher, class adviser, and club moderator. I have also been undergoing professional seminars, trainings, and workshops inside and outside of the institution where I am currently working. These things led me to acquire and develop the necessary skills for a mathematics teacher. Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why? I consider formal education more valuable than skills. The first reason is, in applying for a job, proofs of formal education are readily presented to the employer. Whereas for the skills, it can only be verified through demonstration and execution. The other reason is that formal education involves the acquisition and development of skills. While one can acquire skills without formal education, one cannot have formal education without acquiring skills. Describe the benefits of working with others Working with others develops cooperation and interpersonal skills. It provides a person an opportunity to deal with a variety of people. Also, when one works with others, the teaching-learning process becomes two-way. A person learns from others and others learn from the person. Describe the benefits of working alone Working alone gives one an opportunity to know herself/himself further. This is because the person becomes aware of his/her strengths and weaknesses. Focus is also developed, as well as independence, resourcefulness, and responsibility for one's own actions. What was your worst working experience? As a teacher my worst working experience comes when my students (some of them) fail. When this happens, I feel that I have also failed. It brings down my confidence as a teacher and leads me to question my effectiveness. What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career? The most important thing that I have learned in my career as a teacher is that each person has a gift - talent or intelligence, as we call it. Therefore a person's IQ or academic capabilities does not define who he/she is. What would you consider as your 'dream job'? My dream job is one wherein I can develop and enhance my capabilities while helping others with theirs. I found this in teaching, where everyday, my students and I learn from each other.
