About 12 years in GSM/GPRS

From24 July 2009 till now: Working for –Telco Engineering as partner/Sr. engineer. Nature of work includes installation, commissioning and integration activities of the GSM and CDMA BSS products for several operators such as SLT (Sri Lanka Telecom-CDMA), Dialog Telecom, Mobitel (GSM), Suntel (CDMA) in Sri Lanka.

From 10th June 05 till 15 Jan 2009; I joined Sierra Global Networks Ltd. as a Sr. Engineer, getting involved with integration activities of the GSM/GPRS and CDMA BSS products for several operators such as SLT (Sri Lanka Telecom-CDMA), Dialog Telecom, Mobitel (GSM/GPRS), Suntel (CDMA) in Sri Lanka. Analyze the OMC daily reports and attend to network faults at all sites; attend to BSS hardware and software faults (clear incorrect configuration problems) issues on drop-call, handover failures due to interference and congestion. Making recommendations to RF dept. in case of frequency-plan incompatibilities and in the presence of RF interference providing the necessary spectrum-analyzer-traces in order to retune the BTSs to different frequencies. Making recommendations for hardware expansions in case of congestion due to heavy traffic. Got involved in drive-tests using TEMS and LOMs to ascertain network inconsistencies. Respond to customer complains, investigate and resolve. Attended to the preventive maintenance of the assigned sites. Monitor the reports and find out poor performing cells with problem analysis and action-plans in terms of TCH Drop, SDCCH Drop, CSSR, HO, Congession etc.

Relocated to Lucent, Germany from Lucent Saudi Arabia w.e.f. 15th April 2001.

April 2001 till December 2003 (Technical Support Engineer-GSM/GPRS)

Had been working as a Certified Technical Support Engineer at Wireless Technical Support Center (WTSC) at Tier 2 level to support GSM/GPRS customers and Local field Support (Lucent) Globally. Providing solutions to the customer-problems giving root cause after analyzing log files of trouble tickets escalated by Local field Support engineers and customers. Providing pre-analysis whenever necessary for the Research and Development, after simulating the problems in Lucent labs. Have the ability to execute product verification and test procedures including acceptance testing. Able to test the BSS as a part of the GSM network in lab environment including simulators and other tools. BSS includes BCF-2000 and BTS-2000 or Flexant BTS-2000 which has the feature of a Node-B to be incorporated in a UMTS network. Upgrading and downgrading the BSS according to the Network Releases in the lab and in customer network locations. Able to handle system interruptions by executing the system recovery procedures. Have the knowledge of how to take the backups, reboot the BSS system and how to recover using backups. Have the knowledge to correct the configuration-related software problems and deliver the change where necessary. Verify network performance using Network Data Analyzer tool; seeing into Performance Management Reports, Fault Management Reports, Outage Reports, Configuration Management Reports and Network inconsistencies. Coordinate with in-country-support engineers and customers to ascertain problems in customer networks and clean up faults and inconsistencies. Planning and Execution of Network Integration Tests on 2.5G networks. Planning and Execution of Tests on Um Interface for Interoperability Tests of Lucent BSS against other vendor GSM/GPRS mobiles. Liaison with the Operators in an effort to solve outstanding call handling issues prevalent in the network. System Integration and Feature verification of Lucent BSS.

(a) April 96 up to April 2001 Employed as a BSS technician with Lucent Technologies Int. Inc. GSM network operator in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Perform hands-on in-field technical support functions such as hardware/ software platform on BTS 2000: both on 900Mhz and 1800Mhz. Have a good knowledge in installation, commissioning and maintenance of BSS products and GSM network elements. And related link specifications protocols and frequency plan concepts. Have a good knowledge of system architecture, modules, interfaces and signaling requirements. Administration, maintenance and repair of GSM network BSS equipment, (both BCE, BCF) and BTS. Perform maintenance and repair activities and verify proper operation of BSS equipment after repair. Respond to, interpret and clear alarms and faults reported at the OMC. Maintenance and perform back up of the database of BCE. Familiar with commissioning and integration procedure of the BTS 918(Lucent) Conversant with software tools such as CMA 2000, RBT4, MMI64, MMI 65 and drive test tools such as Loms and Temps. Assisted RF dept. getting involved with the activities such as, recommendation of positioning of antennas, including: Downtilt (electrical & mechanical), re-orientation (azimuth and/or height) and beamwidth specifications. Monitor network performance through the use of drive data & service measurement data. Responsible for on-going network growth, coverage expansion and optimization Integrated new cells into the existing network or recommendation of adding new hardware. Monitoring weekly reports of Network data analyzer to determine optimization. Use sweep test to perform link budget calculation. Familiar with, drive test data BSS statistics, and call path trace analysis in order to troubleshoot drop calls, call failures, poor coverage, TCH/CCH congestion, handover failures, bad quality, hardware faults, link imbalance, timing advance, power increase/decrease, antenna tilt/orientation, add/remove neighbors, checking co/adj-channel interference with the use of Spectrum analyzers and involving of frequency retune.
