Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

I think they are valuable in equal measure. An education is a valuable foundation for learning how to learn and develop thought processes. However, development of the expertise and skill of listening, leading, motivating and inspiring others to perform at their highest levels, is a skill that is honed from experience and practice. It is imperative in today's global marketplace to learn the art of influencing others in highly matrixed environments.

Describe the benefits of working with others

As in my answer above, it is imperative to learn the art of influencing persons over whom you have no direct "authority" in order to work successfully in today's matrixed work environments and global workforces. It is not requisite that you have all the answers, but much more important that you know how to ask the right questions and how to engage others in arriving at business solutions and shared problem solving. Teams of persons focused on improvements and moving the business forward are commited to results much more powerful than a sole individual with an idea.

This must be balanced with the need to move decision-making forward in a meaningful and timely manner...no "paralysis by analysis"

Describe the benefits of working alone

There needs to be some time for introspection and thorough weighing of possibilities and allowance for free-flowing creative throught.

The advantage is in being able to effect change without the sometimes lengthy burden of meetings which can evolve into a "paralysis by analysis".

...Meetings to discuss the agenda of the meeting and the followup meeting to assess the meeting content and the subsequent meeting to discuss pros and cons and then a meeting to discuss why a certain decision should be effected and then several more to discuss how to initiate the decided upon changes...You can sometimes lose the momentum of the improvement during the course of extended discussions leading some to feel that they don't care what the decision is, just let them stop attending meetings...this is hardly the commitment you want going into a new initiative.

What was your worst working experience?

Working with a person who employed a management style of bullying, diminishing others and intimidation as a method of "motivation". This individual confused commitment with compliance, which only lasted long enough for persons to locate more fulfilling work environments. Turnover was high and productivity declined rather than improving.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

The art of listening, both to what is and is not being said; followed closely by the art of asking the right questions to become informed.

What unique skills do you have?

I am a highly expert listener, with very strong perceptive abilities. I have developed the skill of asking meaningful questions which probe to the core of the business and the objectives of the persons involved and of demonstrating a sincere passion for the business in which I am involved.

I am an HR specialist who has a strong foundation in the operations side and makes an excellent business partner, fully understanding my role is to facilitate the business of the business.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

Director, HR Strategy or Director, Talent Acquisition & Management

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

Moving the business forward through people.

What are the least interesting aspects of your field?

paperwork administration

What are the important criteria by which you measure a perspective employer?

Intelligent leadership with a clear focus on the business model. Leadership that recognizes that people work for people, not companies. Leadership that is reflective and changes as the business demands change; believes in continuous improvement. Leadership that encourages a matrixed team and motivates by engagement of the collective talents of their employees. Leadership unafraid to "make a decision".
