Geophysics What qualifications do you hold? Standard 10 and 30 years experiece. Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why? Skills in this line of work is more important than formal education since experience is essential as no two sites are ever the same. The combination of geology, geophysics, topography etc are essential but the experience is paramount to success. Describe the benefits of working with others Working with others can be beneficial, because one can learn from other peoples experience and knowledge. Describe the benefits of working alone Working alone enables me to make on site decisions using available information at my disposal without causing delay and being able to take full responsibilty for the decisions that I make. What was your worst working experience? Gravity surveys in the townships in South Africa during the apartheid years. What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career? Working in remote areas I have learnt that water is precious. What unique skills do you have? With 30 years experience I have developed a "gut feeling" for siting water. Although geophysics, geology, aerial photographs are a good guide, I have learned that experience can't be replaced. What would you consider as your 'dream job'? To be able to phase in from the existing job into a full time hobby. What are the most interesting aspects of your field? Finding water in a remote area and the realization that I have made a difference to the local peoples quality of life. What are the least interesting aspects of your field? Quite often the other contractors hold up the process and slow the production, waiting for them to arrive on site is the least interesting in my field of work. Why am I suitable for this type of work? With 30 years experience I have worked in remote and rural areas and gained a good knowledge of the geophysical and geological methods employed in the exploration of water. I have my own geophysical equipment i.e.electromagnetic unit,resistivity unit and magnetometer. I am able to work on my own.
