British and EU What field do you currently work in? I am a music teacher What fields have you worked in before? I have done construction work and worked as a tour guide around a stately home. I also play organ music in Church for weddings, funerals etc. What qualifications do you hold? Dipmus.t Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why? I think formal education needs to take place, but also more importantly life skills which train for the outside world. Travel is a great educator. Describe the benefits of working with others Through my voluntary work in Malawi, I have worked with wonderful people, and have learned a lot. Interaction and learning about other cultures has been awesome. I also feel that others have benefitted by my being with them. Team work is about recognising others skills and attibutes. Describe the benefits of working alone In working alone, there is time to think and plan and encourages self discipline. Decision taking and learning through mistakes can be constructive. What was your worst working experience? I don't think that I have had a bad experience that I would describe as my worst working experience. Have enjoyed most things that I do. What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career? Being able to take someone and instil a love for music, then see the progression of that person play a piano or other instrument. But also to learn that no everyone has a musical talent. What unique skills do you have? I am a people person, and I have an ability to play music, piano is my main instrument, but I also play guitar and drums. I am in a rock band, but am just as happy being a piece of Chopan or Beethoven. What would you consider as your 'dream job'? Teaching primary school children in Malawi music. What are the most interesting aspects of your field? Seeing pleasure in those I teach, and how someone who previously could not make a tune come to fruition. What are the least interesting aspects of your field? Having to listen to someone who is tone deaf. Do I see myself working in Malawi as a music teacher?
