Ophthalmologist

What nationality are you?

Nigerian

What languages do you speak (and at what level)?

English fluently and a major Nigerian language( Ibo)

What country or area are you looking to work in and why?

Outside the shores of Nigeria:Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Dubai,South Africa etc. I know I have a larger opportunity for career development when I step outside my immediate horizon.

What field do you currently work in?

I am a Senior Registrar in the Opthalmology department of a reputable tertiary hospital in my country. Having recently obtained the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons ,Faculty of Ophthalmology that qualifies me to take up a consultant position , I hope to start building my career in this regard. My job schedule as an SR includes management of Medical Ophthalmic cases including opthalmic emergencies, Ophthalmic surgeries mainly Extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation, Glaucoma surgery, basic lid surgeries etc. I also have a strong experience with Community outreaches and eyecare. I have Organized Ophthalmic Outreaches to villages and localities in my catchment area.

What fields have you worked in before?

I managed the staff clinic of a reputable institute for my one year compulsory National service. I Have also worked briefly in other medical and surgical units like Neurosurgical unit, endocrinology unit.

What qualifications do you hold?

MBBS, Fellowship of the West African College Of Surgeons, Eaculty of Ophthalmolopgy

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

Both are equally important. Formal education instills the prniciples on which medical practice is based, while properly acquired skill gives an expression to this sound knowledge base.

Describe the benefits of working with others

Working with others encorages team spirit, gives the room to exchange ideas and share knowledge. The doctor is enhanced and the patient is better for it.

Describe the benefits of working alone

The patient may get the marginal benefit of being followed up by one and the same Physician and the seeming continuity it implies may increase patient satisfation. For the Surgeon working alone challenges your best and throws you back on your own intiative, and this had better be good.Thus working alone can stimulate growth and personal development.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

Patience,optimism and having faith in oneself

What unique skills do you have?

My patient s love me. I have this unique ability to inspire faith in my patients, and they are happy to have visited with their doctor each time they are leaving the consulting room. I am highly trainable, always eager to learn and absorb new Ideas. I am highly adaptable, I am very open to change.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

Highly stimulating job that will espose me to the latest technology skills and practice pattern in my field with opportunity for growth and development

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

Being able to restore sight to an elderly woman who has being cataract blind and seeing the glow on her face

Wjat are the least interesting aspects of your field?

Having to enucleate the eye of a beautiful African child that presents with retinoblastoma.

Potentials

I have a very dynamic peronality with a great drive for success. I have a very compassionate nature that easily reaches out to my patients Though I am a young Fellow, I am highly intelligent with great clinical acumen, and good grasp of surgical skills and can easily rise up to new challenges, new skills, new technologies if given the opportunity. I know I can contribute immensely to your establishment if given the opportunity. I know I can.
