Full-time Lecturer in Economics, Seth Ananadaram Jaipuria College, Calcutta, 1994 onwards. Now a Senior Lecturer here. Working as a Linux activist from 1999, organized a local Linux- group called ‘GLT-Madhyamgram’ and wrote a 400 A4-page book on Linux in Bengali, e-published on Net in August, 2004, published in December 2005 by Progga Prokshani, Calcutta in hard-copy. Brief Biography: My mother Chhaya Das and father Santosh ranjan Das, with whom my wife and I live, both were teachers, now retired for quite some years, in Higher Secondary schools near Madhyamgram, a suburban town in Greater Calcutta, 23 Kilometers from the city. Childhood had periods of serious poverty, even lack of food at times, due to many reasons. Primary education in a local primary school. My mother urged for a better education and admitted me to Hindu School in Calcutta, one of the heritage institutions of Renaissance Bengal. From there went to St. Xavier’s College for undergraduate, with Honors in economics and two other subjects being Statistics and Mathematics. Then, Post-Graduate degree in Economics from Calcutta University. Then joined there as a Research Fellow for some time. Cultural activities and Political events happenings around us, an under-developed region of an under-developed postcolonial country, attracted me from the very childhood. Started writing in different Bengali little magazines in my very early teens. That culminated in my joining the political process as a CPIM activist around 1978-79. Then, for ten or fifteen years to come, politics was the sole determinant of my life, thus hampering my under-graduate and post-graduate studies to a very large extent in those days. The usual Communist Party straight-jacketing stuff and wide- spread corruption (CPIM is the ruling power in West Bengal for the last 28 years) generated abominations in me. Left CPIM in 1990. Somewhere along the way, writing started to become the major mode of expressing myself in place of politics and my way of intellectual subsistence, losing all prior faith in the process of leftist politics as it prevails. By this time the philosophy of Jacques Derrida and Jacques Lacan started to attract me. A big change came in through my interaction with Friedrich Nietzsche. Karl Marx and Franz Kafka started getting augmented by Nietzsche and Jorg Luis Borges. In 1989, I had my first marriage, a bad one. The only thing that I got from this marriage was my son, who, after my divorce with his mother in 1995, lives with her. These were pretty bad days, and at times it seemed I am plying somewhere around the point of no-return. In 1997 I had my second marriage and this time the loser hit ladyluck. From 1994 I am teaching in this college, teaching under- graduate economics to commerce students, a job that has become enough void for me, in terms of excitement, challenge and everything. Around 1990 I started my research work in Postcolonial Political Economy and Culture Studies, that started getting actualized in terms of essays and papers in English and Bengali from 1996. In 2000, this process led to a book, ‘margin of margin: Profile of an Unrepentant Postcolonial Collaborator’ written by two other authors and me. This area is still one my areas of interest, now going on with my works of reinterpreting and deconstructing ancient Indian scriptures, mainly ‘Gita’ and ‘Brahmasutra’, a commentary of the philosophical theories in Veda by an ancient teacher called Sankara. This process of writing brought in computers, and then, another thing that started exciting me was Open-source- software, known as GNU-Linux. This was philosophically very near to the positions of ‘margin of margin’ in particular, or the postcolonial political economy that I believe in, in general. And these years of living with writing has generated, in my opinion, some aptitudes that come of better use than this college, where the students just hang in to get a graduate degree in commerce and get a job somewhere, without any real interest in knowledge or thought or social sense of responsibility. So now I am planning to go somewhere else. Seeking Employment As: Any kind of work associated with writing (preferably critique or editorial jobs or journalist work), or, research work in Political and Social Philosophy, and Cultural Studies, or, some job has a socially responsible kind of human interaction, like community services or so. List of Publications: A detailed list of publication being too long I am giving here a summary of the important ones. All the Bengali ones are published under the pen-name: Tridib Sengupta. Four novels in Bengali, Tapan Biswaser Khider Batrish Ghanta (1990), Nirantar Prabrajyaye: Dwitio Khashra (1991), Sharmishthar Kolkata, Sharmishthar Prithibi (1993) and Bula, Tomake (1995) Published by ‘Apar’, ‘Pratikshan’, ‘Nandan’ and ‘Rakshash’. Eleven other fictions and two dramas in Bengali, from 1987 to 1993, and 1996 to 1998, published by ‘Apar’, ‘College-Street’, ‘Parichay’, and ‘Pratikshan’. Nineteen Essays in Bengali and four essays in English on Critical theory, Political Economy and Postcolonial Culture Studies from 1995 to 2004, published by ‘Apar’, ‘Annyaswar’, ‘Anushtup’ ‘Other Voice’ and Calcutta University Journal. And many other essays were there too that I wrote for my living, while working as an essayist in ‘Pratikshan’ and later to earn money. Almost all of these novels and fictions and essays are available on Net, mainly at the Bengali website: www.freewebs.com/guruchandali and some other sites. “Tapan Biswaser Khider Batrish Ghanta” (Tapan Biswas in a Hunger of 32 Hours), a novel in Bengali published by Chhandam Printers and Publishers, Calcutta in 1994. A book on Political Economy, “margin of margin: Profile of an Unrepentant Postcolonial Collaborator” by Ajit Chaudhury, Dipankar Das, Anjan Chakraborty (Calcutta, 2000). (ddmomtext.tripod.com/eng/mom.doc) A book on GNU-Linux Operating System and related things, e- published on Net at the GLT-Madhyamgram site: www.geocities.com/ddipankardas/ with a Verbatim Copyleft Licence. “GNU-Linux: Ekti Byaktigata Yatra” (GNU-Linux: A Personal Journey) published by Progga Prokashani, Calcutta in hard-copy in December, 2005. Free Software Foundation of India is thinking on translating this book to other Indian Languages. “Nirantar Prabrajyay: Dwitio Khashra” (Moving Relentlessly: Second Draft) and “Bula, Tomake” (For You, Bula): Two novels in Bengali published by Ababhash, Calcutta in January 2006.
