| Answers: How do I sue the police department? Last spring I was in a car accident involving a police officer. I was driving my mother's minivan at the time. I was preparing to turn into a parking lot so I turned my blinker on and waited for traffic to clear. As I waited, an on duty, uniformed police officer rear ended me and pushed my car into oncoming traffic. Luckily the other cars swerved and avoided hitting me. The officer was not on his way to an emergency and did not have his lights on. He took full responsibility for the accident. He said he had looked down at his computer for a second and when he looked up and saw me it was too late. Later, when the investigators arrived, it was also discovered that he was speeding. The impact of his police car bent the frame of my mother's van and totaled it. I have also had back problems since the accident. I went to the chiropractor for a few months. I was working as a cashier at Walmart at the time. The job required me to be on my feet for long periods of time and my doctor recommended that I quit that position because my back would just get worse. I need to know how to go about suing the police department. I feel that I should receive payment from the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department to pay for the van balance, lost wages from Walmart, medical costs incurred, pain and suffering, and punitive damages. How much should I ask for? I pursued this right after the accident. When we talked to the investigators they said it would take about a year before they got around to my case. So they are the ones dragging this out. Not me. I just turned 19 and I've never dealt with a situation like this. So please shutup with the smart a** comments. Can I also sue for pain an suffering? I know a lot of people fake back injuries but I have a doctor and x-rays that can prove it. We all know that once you have a back injury, it takes years to get rid of. I still have pain to this day |
