CHRISTOPHER KARIYO (196.4.80.174) -

What type of job are you looking for?

I am looking for a High School English Language or Religious Studies teaching job.

What nationality are you?

I am a Zimbabwean

What languages do you speak (and at what level)?

I speak Shona as my mother tongue and English as a second language. English has also been my medium of instruction throughout my educational career.

What country or area are you looking to work in and why?

Iam looking forward to working in Namibia because I have learnt that Namibia is short of English Language teachers since the cuountry is transforming its medium of instruction in education to English.

What countries have you worked in?

I have woprked in Zimbabwe as a teacher from 1991-to the present day.

What field do you currently work in?

I am an English and Religious Education teacher by profession. Currently I am also working as a Graduate Researcher Assistant at the University of Zimbabwe- Department of Teacher Education.

What fields have you worked in before?

I have worked as an English Language and Religious Education teacher up to Advanced Level(Form 6)for the past 18 years. I have also worked as a school administrator of a school with a student enrolment of over 700 students and a staff enrolment of 30 teachers for the pas 14 years.

What qualifications do you hold?

I hold a Bachelor of Education Degree in English and Religious Studies (B.Ed.-Africa University 2003), Certificate in Education (English and Religious Studies)-(C.E.- Gweru Teachers' College 1990) Ordinary Level Certificate, Advanced Level Certificates in English and Religious Studies. Currently I am studying for a Master of Education Degree in English with the University of Zimbabwe. I have completed Part 1 of the programme and am now working on my project.

What have been your most notable achievements in your career?

My most notable achievements have been attaining a 98% pass rate in English Language at Ordinary Level in 2001 and a 100% pass rate in Divinity at 'A' Level from 2005-2008. As a school administrator, from 1995 to date, I have been quite instrumental in championing the infrastructural development of Nyakuipa High School and promoting student and teacher discipline for improved school tone and performance. I have also worked harmoniously with the school parents.

Describe the benefits of working with others

One gets the job done easily because people have different talents and abilities. It therefore helps to work with and through others especially if one is a leader. There is also the advantage of developing socially and professionally by learning from others.

Describe the benefits of working alone

One concentrates more on doing the work at hand thus avoiding wasting valuable working time engaging in social talk which if unchecked might be counter productive.

What was your worst working experience?

This was when in 1994 out of a class of 25 students only 10 passed Religious Studies. I had never produced such poor results in my career.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

I have learnt that the greatest reward for a teacher is to see his or her students pass and then meet those students later in life doing well. Engineers manufacture technological equipment but teachers mould human beings so even if the teachers' remuneration is low they should not ruin the students' future. Doing so is unethical and the consequencies to both the students and the nation are long term.

What unique skills do you have?

I am a trained Counselor, effective communicator, and computer literate

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

Lecturing English Courses in a reputable University.

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

Teaching English Language and Divinity-The Gospels- to High School students

Wjat are the least interesting aspects of your field?

Teaching Poetry

Are you married?

Yes I am married with 3 children -2 girls and 1 boy

How can potential employers contact you?

Contact Address: University of Zimbabwe, Faculty of Education, Department of Teacher Education, Box MP 167, Mount Pleasant, Harare, Zimbabwe. Tel:+263912847445,2634333550
