both are of importance, written theory provides the background and the knowledge of why and how behind the skills that are being done. nursing requires education and skills to develop continous with a nurses career depending on new research of best practice. i enjoy both the formal education side writting essays carrying out research as well as the practical side of nursing in the day to day job.
Describe the benefits of working with others
working as a team benefits everyone, its enables things to get done faster and better by delegating tasks to one another. as well as providing support for everyone in the team and a helping hand from others who have different skills and knowledge to you. it also benefits the patient in this way as they recieve care of a varied skill mix. working in a team also helps you to feel like your not on your own facing challenages. but in order for these benefits the team needs to be good at communicating. i feel i am a welcome member to a team, i work hard but am also friendly and approachable.
Describe the benefits of working alone
sometimes we are required to work alone, working alone enables concentration and tests your skills and knowledge. i enjoy working alone when needs be to meet deadlines and as well as work under pressure for example when staffing is short.
What was your worst working experience?
my worst working experience was when i was a student nurse in london working in a&e. i was assigned to look after a patient that had cut his head open with a knife, he had a history of having a mental disorder and a troubled past,an alcoholic and now being homeless. i was quite happy to look after this patient, but as the day went on and his behaviour became harder to deal with eg wiping blood on me, swearing, running away, and i had to constantly watch him and keep him entertained. the only reason this is my worst experience is because the other nurses in a&e did not offer me support, i didnt get a break for 7 hours and i just felt they were ungrateful to my work, which was unpaid as a student. the situation worked out well as i really got to know the patient and learnt how to deal with his behaviour, which has helped me alot since this!! i also learnt to show appreciation to others and offer support.
What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?
never judge someone, in nursing we see patients and we make assumptions based upon the little that we know or their apperance. i now take everyone as a blank piece of paper this enables me to get to know them and gain an understanding of their needs.
What unique skills do you have?
im a trained anaesthetic nurse, but i have also worked in a nursing home which i would consider again, i have worked in the catering industry so i have my hygiene certificate and my first aid certficate.
i feel im hard working, smiley, organised, well prepared, keen to learn and develop my skills.
What would you consider as your 'dream job'?
working in theatre in amsterdam, i love the city and i love my job!
What are the most interesting aspects of your field?
working in neuro theatres and obsterics has enabled me to see some very interesting operations. working in addenbrookes in cambridge provided me with excellent opportunities as it is a well established research hospital. in anaethetics you never know who your next patient is or what will happen that is very interesting to me.
Wjat are the least interesting aspects of your field?
its all interesting
show an example of a incident you used your initative and it worked well
i once had a patient that was a type two diabetic, she was told to stop taking her tablets 2 days before the surgery, however she was elderly and could get quite confused at times and this resulted in her taking her tablets. during the operation i took the patients blood sugar and it was 2.9mmol/ls, this is dangerously low. i reacted quickly informing the anaesthetist and getting him the glucose into saline infusion which was infused in 20 mins. thereafter i assessed my patient regularly taking blood sugar every 15 mins for the first hour, then halfly then hourly. the patients blood sugar returned to a suitable level and the operation went well. the patient recovered, and this taught me a vital lesson on the importance of communicating with patients and ensuring they understand completely. this was a very dangerous situation as when blood sugar levels drop the brain does not recieve the sugar it needs as energy to work properly.
