Luis Maloney (64.126.139.39) - 09/16/09 17:38

What type of job are you looking for?

I'm looking for any full or part time job that can help pay for rent and groceries.

What nationality are you?

I'm half Irish, half Mexican. Odd combination, I know, but I'm proud of it.

What languages do you speak (and at what level)?

I used to be fluent in Spanish, but it has been years since I've truly practiced it. I do plan on returning to Mexico soon, so I will relearn it as I visit family.

What country or area are you looking to work in and why?

I'm looking to stay in the Netherlands, hopefully in Amsterdam. When I last visited, I thought it was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. I loved the Museum of Art and History, and I plan on using what I find there as inspiration.

What countries have you worked in?

I have only ever worked in the States, but I have traveled extensively, and I have fought fires in several places along the West Coast.

What field do you currently work in?

I work for the U.S. Forest Service as a firefighter. I fight forest fires in the summer to earn enough money to pay for school, which I pay for all by myself.

What fields have you worked in before?

I have worked in food services mainly before I started work for the Forest Service. I've waited tables, and prepared food. I have also worked as a landscaper and basic laborer.

What qualifications do you hold?

I have graduated high school, and I have finished a year of college. I am also trained as a wild land firefighter, and have trained as a structural firefighter.

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

I believe that a formal education is very important. I am a strong believer in the fact that ignorance and stupidity is the basis for most human problems, i.e. war. But skills seem to be more valuable. Skilled labor has been the trunk from which most societies have been built upon, and it is upon these laborers that our societies will continue to depend on.

Describe the benefits of working with others

Together, people have built cities, conquered whole nations and developed world powers. I think that together we can achieve the most ambitious of goals.

Describe the benefits of working alone

When working alone, I think that creativity is allowed to shine through. The greatest personal works were created alone, such as powerful poetry and art.

What was your worst working experience?

The worst experience I have had working occurred on a fire in Northern Washington. I was commanded, without being consulted, to go to the doctors office because of a laceration on my arm. It was a waste of time, in my opinion, and I was only told to do so because those in command didn't want me to come back at some later point in time and blame them for not allowing me to take care of it. I understand the reasoning, but it was ludicrous given the circumstances, the wound was superficial.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

The most important lesson I have learned is to follow proper protocol when involved with something dangerous, such as cutting down trees, or fighting fire. Directions are always something to be respected, but certain things, even if they don't make sense at the time, are in effect due to prior accidents, etc.

What unique skills do you have?

I like to consider myself an artist, and I am traveling in order to broaden my horizons, to learn about the people's of the world so that I can create art that will mean many things to many different people; so I can have the experience of a thousand cultures flavoring my work. I like to read and write, which seems a rare trait these days, and I enjoy having philosophical debates. I am also trained as a firefighter, and I love to work with my hands.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

Ideally, I would love to be a successful artist. I love expressing myself through various media, and I also enjoy others understanding the what, and why of my thoughts, which I express artistically.

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

My current field of work is firefighting, and the most interesting aspect of that job is seeing all the various flora and fauna that abound in nature. I love learning about how certain trees/terrain will affect, and be effected by, fire

Wjat are the least interesting aspects of your field?

The least interesting part is the inability to bathe properly after days upon days of intense labor. No one is interested in how badly you smell or how dirty you look. I usually have to hose off outside before I take a true shower.

Why are you not in the United States?

I am no longer in the U.S. because I can no longer deal with people's expectations of me. School to me has become an oppressive means for society to mold me into a compliant drone. I want to enjoy my journey in life, without others' rules, ideals, and expectations oppressing my creativity. I feel that if I leave all that behind, I will be able to realize my full potential as an artist.
