Providing Medical services in the Maternal Child Health field

English and Spanish

St. Maarten or other Caribbean location

US only

currently US only

What field do you currently work in?

I have worked at a variety of medical centers from small community hospitals and large univesity affiliated teaching institutions like Johns Hopkins Hospital and University of Maryland Medical Systems

What fields have you worked in before?

Respiratory Therapy, Childbirth education and Professional Doula, All areas of Maternal Child Health Antepartum, Intrapartum and Postpartum, Newborn Care, Lactation Services I have worked as Adjunct Clinical Faculty teaching Nursing students

What qualifications do you hold?

RN Registered Nurse with BSN degree CNM Certified Nurse-Midwife MS degree Adjunct Faculty Appointment in the School of Nursing and Health Science

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

Both are necessary. One needs the formal education and theoretical background to know and understand the physiological basis for how the human body functions and why in adition to the actual hands on skills required to perform the tasks necessary to function inthe Healthcare field as a competent provider

Describe the benefits of working with others

Noone can work alone; especially in the Healthcare field so that we can learn from each other, support the decision making proccess when developing a plan of care for our patients and using the Team approach in providing quality care that is also delivered with caring and compassion.

Describe the benefits of working alone

Autonomy; the ability to set your own hours and conditions of employment. It also enables the solo practitioner to develop a close and trusting relationship with their Healthcare provider

What was your worst working experience?

Working with mean, disgruntled and "burned out" individuals who have lost their passion and enthusiam when providing care to patients

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

That knidness, compassion, teamwork and a puttinga smile on your face and leaving your own personal baggage at the door is the way to approach your job and people interactions each and every day

What unique skills do you have?

Ability to connect and interact with people from all backgrounds, nationalities and walks of life. As a Midwife I have had the opportunity to work with International and diverse populations of people. I feel cultural competency in caring for women, infants and families as a Midwife and having a worldview is unique skill that is developed with experience

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

Working with other OB providers and Mdwives in a clinic, hospital or birthing center environment

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

Meeting and developing relationships with women and families from diverse backgrounds from the Amish community to the Navaho Indians in the Southwest, to international diplomats

What do you enjoy doing in your spare?

Traveling to beach locations, swimming, reading and playing tennis
