| As some states see gains, New Mexico lost jobs in March New Mexico lost another 2200 jobs last month - while most states were making gains in employment. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says the state's unemployment rate was 8.8% in March, up from 8.7% in February. Denise Montoya of Albuquerque has been out of work for almost one year. She says long term unemployment has taught her some hard lessons about making do with less - much less. " To pay my mortgage, " the former hotel manager said. "To pay my utilities, and to just live basically, get back to the basics, and maybe that's a good thing." 33 other states grew more jobs in March, with Maryland leading the nation. Unemployed aircraft maintenance worker Larry Whiteside says that's nice, but it doesn't help people in his line of work in this part of the country. " Sometimes the work is there, " said Whiteside. "Sometimes it isn't there. Sometimes it only lasts for a certain time. In my case usually it's about 3 to 6 months." New Mexico's unemployment rate is still below the national rate of 9.7%. Brittnie Perea is one of those keeping it there - she found a new job teaching at a child care center after being unemployed about a month. She says that was long enough. " It was kind of hard, " said Perea. " It wasn't too too hard, but just for the fact that I'm used to being on my own and doing for myself.
