Research Work ExperienceWhat type of job are you looking for? I am currently looking for a job in the biological field. I went to school in North Carolina, Belmont Abbey College. I graduated in May 2009 and would like the exposure in my field of study. Some of the opportunities include research work and any organizations dealing with health care that my field applies. What nationality are you? I am a kenyan, born and raised in Nairobi. I enjoy my country a lot and have been blessed to have travel to other countries in my 25 years. I see the world as a beautiful place. What languages do you speak (and at what level)? My most fluent language is English. I also speak kiswahili, which is my native language. I understand a little bit of luo which is my mother tongue. I took French as a subject in my early years, therefor I know the basics. I also picked up some hello greetings from my travels from Italy and some arabic speaking countries, which I have been in. What country or area are you looking to work in and why? Right now I would like to work in the United States, mainly because I went to college in North Carolina and I am farmiliar with the area. I do not mind to moving to any other state either. I also like to work in Kenya because everyone finds heart with a place they call home. Either way, traveling is always my joy. I love to experience different cultures and new places. What countries have you worked in? I have only worked in the United States. I worked in a school job from my college and also was exposed to sales which are both not of my field. I currently volunteer in a hospital in the emergency room area, which I enjoy. I wish I could go into health care and areas of my biological field, which will give me the exposures that I am looking for in this point of my life. What countries do you have a visa to work in? I currently have employment authorization in the United States and my native country, Kenya that I have my citizenship. What field do you currently work in? I currently volunteer at the hospital in the emergency room in Gaston Memorial Hospital. I have a certification in nurse assisting that would enable me to work in the nursing area, registered in North Carolina. Most jobs seek experience, so it has not been easy for me to jump into the work field. What fields have you worked in before? I have worked in the sales area. I went into sales because I like to try out knew things when I get the opportunity. I now know that my interests are directed more in research work. I got a glimpse of research in biology in senior seminar, where I did my own research on multicellularity and the sensory system. I also got training to become a nurse aid which I thought would open my opportunity into the health care field, which is something I would consider. What qualifications do you hold? My qualifications include: research work, which I carried out one on my own with guidance from my professor. I did alot of lab work through my college years, such as cutting up body tisues and placing them on slides for examination. In courses like parasitology, I examined parasites and was introduced to epidemiology and their risks. I was given assignments where I had to complete a case study of sick patients and discover what the patient was infected with. I achieved confidence in being able to find causes of disease by myself and how to treat them. I am also computer literate which I got certification for after graduating from high school, and took additional courses during my college years. In addition, I have good ideas when it comes to creativity, which I hold from my artistic talents. I like to draw and paint on my free time. Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why? Formal education is the process of training and developing people in knowledge, skills, mind, and character. Therefore, we need formal education to perform skills. However, at the end of the day the importance is that we can perform the skill. The practical element of being able to apply what you've been taught is what counts. Practicality shows that you are able to perform, so I consider skills more valuable. Describe the benefits of working with others Working with others is always a plus. It always creates a learning environment. Besides, two heads are always better than one. Describe the benefits of working alone The benefits of working alone is that you are your own boss. You know what you are capable of achieviving. That way, you set your goals and go for them. You do not have anyone holding you back or making you second guess yourself. It gives you the mindset that others are counting on you to solve whatever it is that is given to you. Eventually , it helps boost self confidence when you have accomplished whatever it was by knowing you did it! What was your worst working experience? Given the fact that I really don't have that much working experience, I can only compare the two jobs that I have had, sales representative and working in the school monastery. I enjoyed all my work environments mainly because the people were friendly, and easy to get along with. I do not complain much, this is a hard question for me to answer, but the only reason I would pick one out of the two as my worst working experience, would be in response to it being a field that is not of my interest, which is working in the monastery. Either way, I take what I learn and carry it on along with me. What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career? I have learnt throughout my career, not only career but through reading books and my own life experiences, ones you start something, always finish it! Don't ever give up! Don't tell yourself that you are not capable of doing something! Always have a positive outlook in life! Dream big and you will achieve the impossible. These are my motivationl words. What unique skills do you have? Unique? Thats a hard one! I believe we are all made differently. To me that should be unique by itself. I love alot of things that I do on my free time and get alot of compliments. Therefore, Its hard for me to say what that one unique skill is. To me I haven't found my skill that stands out, maybe I am yet to discover it. If I told you I sing, so many people sing, painting the same, so I wouldn't say that they are unique. I like dancing, was the president of the dance team in my college. Hence, dancing would be one of my skills. I still wouldn't call it unique. I've been told I am a person of many talents many times. To me they are just hobbies that I pick up. So if you would ask me what unique skills that I have? I would consider my qualities that I have listed as my qualifications that I have learnt through my years. What would you consider as your 'dream job'? If you asked me this question five years ago, I would have answered a doctor with my own clinic without blinking. I was certain this was always what I wanted to be growing up. I find joy in healing the sick. I was a first aider in high school, majored in biology in college (pre-med). All the decisions I have made until now have been influenced by the life goal choices I set then of being a doctor. I admit I have gone through a lot of life challenging experiences that have been distructing, and made me question alot of my decisions and choices. I still keep that at the back of my mind, everytime when asked about my dream. I want to know that the choices I make are for me, so I am still on that journey. I believe I will get there! Its important to be realistic at times and also at the same time keep your options opened; therefore, I juggle them both. What are the most interesting aspects of your field? Right now my field is biology. Biology being defined as the study of life is every reason that I majored in it. Life has so many questions about it. I want the answers, and the answers are always interesting to me. I grew up interested in all the sciences, biology being my number one, and I like being surrounded in the aspects of my joy. Even though some may say its a challenge, my motivation is I'm doing something I love. Love for my field is the reason I keep going. I always say do what you love because you will be doing it for the rest of your life. What are the least interesting aspects of your field? My least aspects of my field is the challenge and hard work that comes along with it, sometimes becomes time consuming. However, I always challenge myself, and accomplishing it all in the end, is a sweet reward of satisfaction. Would you consider working a temporary job? A temporary job is fine. My main focus is experience in my field. If it takes geting training or working with someone else with the experience I am looking for, I would not mind. Exposure in the area should be what I need in specializing in something. Biology in itself is broad and that opportunity in itself should help me in discovering alot more. I would also consider and internship opening or any opening that comes along my way. Experience is the key! How can potential employers contact you?
