Contracts and Project Management What fields have you worked in before? I have started my work as a construction engineer and later shifted my field to supervision. Having worked as a Resident Engineer for several years in international consultancy firms, I joined, UNOPS ans the Senior Contracts Engineer. In this year I was invited by the Ministry of Tourism to take up the position of Deputy Team Leader with all deligated powers of the Engineer for Contracts to manage this Tourism Resources Improvement Project. The Engineer for Contracts is Mr. Kazinoru Seky who visits the project one week per one month but all technical matters have been deligated to me What qualifications do you hold? I am a Chartered Civil Engineer with B.Sc in Civil Engineering and Memberships of ICE London and IE of Sri Lanka Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why? Skills blended with education. A man cannot work without skills and common sense. The education will improve the skill and the ability to take correct decisions. Common sense would guide you to take the correct and quick decisions and improve confidence in what you do. Describe the benefits of working with others No one alone can do a job. Any job is an outcome of a team effort. One must realise that the objective of an office or an organisation is a product of team work. No one in the team is an idle object. The Leader should be able to get the maximum of his team and of course he should lookafter his team mates to explot individual's skill. Describe the benefits of working alone If the objective is oneman target, working alone would create less stress as there is no personnel management involved. You can plan your own works to suit your skill and time frame. But working alone can reduce your efficiency. What was your worst working experience? I have no worst experiences. I could remember only two occations. One occation was when I worked in Estern Boundary where the LTTE was active. They started killing civilians. All civillians left. Only three senior engineers (one was me) who were in forefront of the development works stayed back. The second incident was again in the same area where the works were suspendedfor months by the other terrorist group. Had to survive with tank fish without anything to eat. All transports in and out from the project area were ordered suspended by the terrorists. What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career? The confidence that one can achieve through genuineness and hard work. And also the respect and the ability to take control and the ability to be in a commanding position. That is a good lesson I always learnt and always came back to me with many returns. What unique skills do you have?
