Formal education provides the background (knowledge) of what to expect in real life. Working enables one to get down to the nitty gritty/apply what we have learnt in order to get the job done or to arrive at the best solution. Ofcourse there are instances in life where formal education does not prepare you for the practicalities of life and one learns on the job.
