Joseph Okon OTR/L and Maria Archila RN (98.150.117.122) - 10/07/09 02:32

What type of job are you looking for?

I am looking for a teaching position in the field of Occupational Therapy as a Senior Lecturer. We are both United States citizens.

What languages do you speak (and at what level)?

I speak English,Efik, and Ibibio fluently. My wife speaks English and Spanish fluently.

What country or area are you looking to work in and why?

Qatar. I want to experience living and working in the Middle East.

USA,Nigeria,Netherlands Antilles,French West Indies(St. Martin), Belize.

What countries do you have a visa to work in?

None at this time.

What field do you currently work in?

Occupational Therapy and my wife in Nursing.

What fields have you worked in before?

Lecturer Physical Education Rehabilitation/Coaching.

What qualifications do you hold?

BS Physical Education Rehabilitation Therapy Masters Equivalent BOT Professional Occupational Therapy Private Pilot certification Single Engine Land

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

I consider it necessary to receive formal instruction so as to improve understanding and knowledge of the theoretical base needed to master a skill/profession. This forms a foundation by which rational and logical performance of tasks may be carried out. However the need to achieve performances at an effective and efficient level requires that practice of rote skills be executed repetitively. This action is improved with formal education. Thus by relating to the concept of learning about the whole, then parts of the whole (skills), and then the entire whole concept. I confirm my thought as to why formal education is more valuable, when required to learn abstract concepts.

Describe the benefits of working with others

Team work is important when carrying out tasks that require a chain of command, unity of command,or a unified command. The benefit is that each member or part of the extended group has an identity, a role and function, know who to report to and understands his/her particular objective and goal as it relates to working with others.

Describe the benefits of working alone

Single resource duties may allow the individual to work alone using equipment or tools that will enable them to achieve completion of a task or fulfill an objective. The benefit of such work is usually held in light of limits in human resources, reduced geographical limits in area space for performance of task. At such times individuals working alone may efficiently and effectively work to completion or to end of designated time.

What was your worst working experience?

I was working at a Hospital that expected me to work in to many different areas of the hospital during the same day.I saw patients in the Cardiac and Trauma intensive care unit then followed other patients that were acute post surgical, while following telemetry patients up from ICU,and seeing inpatient acute rehabilitation patients that had their medical records on computer but the computers were not readily assessible,so that getting an understanding of the patient history was after waiting long delays. That hospital wanted me to even see outpatient who had worked with other therapist and I had to look at their short hand notes to figure out what I should be doing with the patient just before they came in.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

Respect the patient and others, come to work with a positive attitude, maintain the highest integrity in and out of the work place, work towards achieving excellent results in all that you do.

What unique skills do you have?

I can problem solve and analyze information quickly. Then synthesize it into workable and measurable objectives. I am an excellent listener. I am a good and reliable facilitator, teacher and educator. I am confident enough to work on my own and also able to work in management positions of leadership. I love to fly and enjoy flying multi and single engine general aviation aircrafts.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

My dream job at this time in my life would be to teach rehabilitation and habilitation theory, methods, techniques, and practical skills in the art and science of occupational therapy.

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

I never stop learning,I experience so many different challenges, I meet so many interesting people from different walks of life, roles and lifestyles, that I never get tired of doing what I do. Helping others to help themselves to improve their quality of life.

Wjat are the least interesting aspects of your field?

The least interesting aspect of occupational therapy is cleaning up spills that have occurred due to yours or patient error. Whatever requires cleaning immediately due to safety reasons is the responsibility of the therapist to take care of the matter before someone falls.

How can potential employers contact you?
