DJ with 12 years experience looking for a new Challenge!!!What type of job are you looking for? DJ/Promotions job. What nationality are you? English (UK) What languages do you speak (and at what level)? English to an extremely high standard. French to GCSE standard. What country or area are you looking to work in and why? Ideally Spain, Israel, Portugal, Southern France, Med Islands, or anywhere else that sounds like a new interesting challenge. I'd effectively just like a change in lifestyle, and to see some different parts of the world. Also, I'd like after 10 years working for the same club as a resident DJ/Promoter, to do something in a new, fresh environment. What countries have you worked in? England, Scotland, Wales. What countries do you have a visa to work in? All EU member countries. What field do you currently work in? DJ, Promotions, Live Music. Music production, What fields have you worked in before? Retail for several years. Landscape design and architecture. Some labouring. Bar work. Sports and recreation. Live music Performance. What qualifications do you hold? GCSE's English/English Litrature BB Maths B Double Science AA Geography A* Physical Education A Design and Communication A* Art and Design A French A A-Levels Design Technology A Geography A General Studies B Maths D I also studied Architecture for 3 years, and was predicted to achieve a 2:1, but left to pursue a professional career in music I also hold an English Basketball Association Coaching award, and I played football at County/Center of Excellence level. Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why? I think that depends on the individual and what field they work in. For example, a DJ would be far better off with DJ'ing skills than a Masters degree in Biology!!!! On a more serious note, a balance of the two is important. The basics of a formal education are something we all need, yet in later life, it becomes more apparent that a broad skill base is more important. Especially in the field of DJ'ing and promotional work. Describe the benefits of working with others I'm a very social and approachable person so I find many benefits from working with others. It helps us develop communication skills, we're able to gain experience and knowledge from our peers, we're able to share our own skills with others. It also helps, in my opinion, to make people generally more well-rounded individuals, with a better understanding of other peoples problems. As they say 'two heads are better than one'!!! Describe the benefits of working alone Working alone tends to help the individual concentrate on the task at hand. Sometimes a task is also better suited to an individual undertaking it rather than a group. When focus is needed, a group can slow the process down quite dramatically. Especially if everyone feels strongly about any aspect of the task at hand. What was your worst working experience? Any retail experience around the Christmas period used to come pretty close to being a little too stressful. Mainly due to peoples attitudes towards each other rather than just pure footfall through the store. Nothing particularly bad has ever happened to me tho. Just the occasional irate customer. I find it best to remain calm, and hence don't have any horror work stories. Luckily. What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career? That being approachable and honest tends to lead to the best results in any field. What unique skills do you have? A desire to truly make everything I do as close to excellence as possible. In DJ'ing and promting terms, i have an exceptionally expansive knowledge and catalogue to fall back on. I've run club nights, small festivals and live events, been involved in promotional design, street teams, live sound/lighting engineering. I also have DJ residency at Corporation, Sheffield UK, which i've held for 10 years. Plus nights in at least 5 other UK cities, in clubs playing music from Metal, to Soul, to D'n'b, to Pop, to Indie, to Dubstep, to House, to Punk/Hardcore .... I could list genre's i've played for hours!!! But I won't!!! I've also organised tours for bands, tour managed, stage managed, and also been in a signed band myself. Which involved writing and producing music, releasing an album, artwork, extensive touring, and dealings with the media. I'm also now having a go at electronic music production. Focussing mainly in the styles of Dubstep/D'n'B/Breakbeat. I feel that in musical and promotional terms I am a very unique individual. I've had an insight into many aspects of the industry, and many different ways of doing things that I can confidently say very few other people have. What would you consider as your 'dream job'? I already had my dream job when I was vocalist for 4 years in a signed band, called the Mirimar Disaster. A close second would be to own and run my own venue. At least 2000 capacity, split between different sized rooms, in order to hold a variety of different events. I'd make it as eclectic as possible too, as i feel there is far too much segregation in music, both socially and economically. What are the most interesting aspects of your field? The people. Without a doubt. After 15 years being heavily involved in music, i've certainly met people from all walks of life, cultures, countries and socia/economic backgrounds. Also Music is an ever changing evolving aspect of all our lives, its one of the most interesting fields i can imagine working in. What are the least interesting aspects of your field? Well i've spent many a cold rainy night outside venues flyering and promoting nights. Thats the only bad thing I can really think of. Why are you considering leaving a long term residency in a succesful club, to take a big risk in a country that you may not even be able to speak the language? I feel it's just time for a change in my life. I'm exceptionally proud of everything I've achieved here, but the world is a big place, and i'd like to have a positive impact elsewhere. I'd also really like to see some more of the world, some different culture etc, because we only have a limited time to explore the planet we're on. Learning another language to a fluent level appeals to me greatly too, and becomeing a success in a place that isn't home, is something I feel it's time to go and do.
