EnglishWhat type of job are you looking for? I am looking for a job teaching English/EFL in Spain during the summer of 2010. I have been teaching ESL in Massachusetts for over twenty years to grades K-12 and have also taught Adult Basic ESL as well as graduate courses to teachers in Second Language Acquisition. I have a master's in Applied Linguistics, am a native speaker of Portuguese and also speak Spanish fluently. What nationality are you? I was born in Graciosa, Acores but was raised in Massachusetts, USA. I am a citizen of both Portugal and the USA. What languages do you speak (and at what level)? Portuguese and Spanish fluently, some Italian and French as well. What country or area are you looking to work in and why? My partner and I are both teachers who love Spain and speak Spanish. We would love to spend our summer vacation teaching and traveling there. What countries have you worked in? I have worked in the USA and in Toronto, Canada. What countries do you have a visa to work in? I have not acquired a visa yet but expect no problems obtaining a visa to work in Spain. What field do you currently work in? I am the coordinator of an English Language Learner Program (grades K-12) in a Massachusetts public school setting. What fields have you worked in before? I have worked for the airline industry and in education. What qualifications do you hold? I am a certified teacher with both a Bachelor's Degree in English and Spanish as well as a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics. Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why? Both formal education and life/work experience are valuable. Describe the benefits of working with others When we teach others we learn ourselves. Describe the benefits of working alone I prefer to work with others although some work must be solitary, writing for example. What was your worst working experience? I was once hired for a job that was described quite differently than its reality. I quit and am grateful I did. What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career? That I have a lot to give others, that it is important to share my talents and gifts. What unique skills do you have? Teaching teachers on the gradate level is somewhat unique. In the USA speaking multiple languages is unique, but of course that would not be the case in Europe. What would you consider as your 'dream job'? The one I have now, which gives me the summer off so I may pursue other interests. What are the most interesting aspects of your field? So many people in the world want to learn or improve their English. I was brought up in the us, studied here from grade 1 until my Master's and am highly proficient as an English teacher. Also I love meeting other people from other cultures and ESL/EFL affords me that. What are the least interesting aspects of your field? Nothing. Why do I want to summer in Spain? Because it is a dream I want to make come true. Most of the others have come true, why not this one? How can potential employers contact you? E-mail is best ... mgdasilva@verizon.net |
