Trinidad and Tobago - Teaching Jobs
Forum Post

Brentnol E. Johnson

English Language, Mathematics, Social Studies.

What type of job are you looking for?

I am seeking to deliver high quality education as a Special Education teacher to students at a Primary or Junior Secondary level through team work and excellent teacher-student relationships in a goal driven environment that allows students to accomplish their full potential.

What nationality are you?

I am a Guyanese.

What languages do you speak (and at what level)?

I speak fluent English professionally and socially.

What country or area are you looking to work in and why?

Trinidad or Tobago. As a Guyanese native I can easily relate to the Trinidadian socioeconomic backgrounds and culture from which my students will be drawn, having been raised in a similar environment. This helps me to function as an authority in addressing their academic needs within the framework of their individual backgrounds.

What countries have you worked in?

I have taught in the United States and in Guyana.

What countries do you have a visa to work in?

I can always work permanently in the United States and in Guyana.

What field do you currently work in?

I currently work in the field of Education.

What fields have you worked in before?

I have previously worked in Education(Teaching), Juvenile and Youth Counseling, Banking(Financial Investigations), Customer Service, and Information Technology.

What qualifications do you hold?

I have a Professional Trained Teacher Certification from Cyril Potter College of Education, Turkeyen, Guyana.

I have also completed extensive coursework in Computer Electronics and Computer Science to be equipped to function effectively in the world of Information Technology for the benefit of myself and the students I teach.

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

I consider formal education an asset because it produces a more rounded individual for the general workforce. However, the growth of IT and modern economic trends have indicated that an education that is skill-based commands a higher wage in general. I would recommend the coupling of a formal education with a trending skill for a win win situation.

Describe the benefits of working with others

Working with others presents a great opportunity to collaborate and share ideas. It encourages team work and respect for opinions other than your own. It also provides a forum for acquiring new learning so that one can grow in knowledge, attitude and behavior. Sometimes it takes teamwork to make the dream work.

Describe the benefits of working alone

Working alone allows for quiet introspective function where one can pull from own resources and realize strengths and weaknesses. It can sometimes be quicker because ideas do not have to be tabled and sorted, or sometimes voted on as working in a group.

What was your worst working experience?

I had to restrain an irate and physically aggressive juvenile single-handed in a detention center.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

I have learned to be so very patient. Teaching Special Education students teaches one to be very patient. I have enjoyed that lesson very much.

What unique skills do you have?

I am a proficient Special Education Teacher with over eleven years of verifiable experience in child education. Some unique skills include: sound understanding of childhood development and an awareness of developmental problems that can interfere with learning ability; observing and identifying students with possible learning difficulties; ability to establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom; plan instructional lessons from curriculum to meet I.E.P goals of students in my care; develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (I.E.P) with reasonable modifications; organize and conduct I.E.P. meetings; maintain accurate and complete records as required by program regulations, School Board policies, and other educational laws; collaborate with team members in planning and sharing information; supervise teacher assistant participating in the learning process; instruct in the least restrictive environment; communicate with students clearly and concisely; display mastery of subject matter taught; maintain professional communication with parents/guardians; ensure safety and well-being of children in my care; assess students' ability utilizing tests, observation skills, and other assessment methods. There are more skills that can be discussed at a later time.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

I have always referred to teaching as my "professional hobby". It is by far my dream job.

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

I am delighted when my students' faces "light up" as a new concept is understood. Passing on that new knowledge to them fulfills my philosophy: "The sharing of knowledge eradicates ignorance".

What are the least interesting aspects of your field?

If teaching has a down side for me it will have to be when I experience a child who suffers from such an profound state of learning disability that his/her ability to comprehend and retain is very poor. That is a very regrettable and painful experience.

What hobbies do you have?

My hobbies are teaching, traveling, meeting people, and reading.
