Teaching English as a Foreign Language

What type of job are you looking for?

I am searching for a teaching position at any language institute in need of a native English speaker to instruct English classes.

What nationality are you?

I am American, from the United States.

What languages do you speak (and at what level)?

English is my native language and I have a degree in Spanish.

What country or area are you looking to work in and why?

I am searching for a job in Montevideo, Uruguay, because I have deep appreciation for and familiarity with the city. Also, I am looking to teach in language institutes because they are more personal and focused.

What countries have you worked in?

I have studied Spanish in Spain, Chile, and Uruguay, but I have only held an actual teaching position in The United States.

What countries do you have a visa to work in?

I currently do not have a visa to work in any country.

What field do you currently work in?

I work with native and non-native English speakers in the English Department of The University of Central Missouri.

What fields have you worked in before?

In the past, I have just worked in the English Department.

What qualifications do you hold?

I have a Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language.

Which do you consider more valuable? Formal education or skills and why?

Formal education is an important asset, yet regardless of the opportunities one has had in a formal education setting, skills are what ultimately set one apart from the rest.

Describe the benefits of working with others

Working with others augments the capability to share ideas with others and to gain valuable feedback from professions with experience in a similar field of study or interest. It is important to have a team of reference and to establish a small community within a given job environment.

Describe the benefits of working alone

Working alone can allow someone a unique piece of mind and to be able to go by his or her own rules. It possibly allows for more flexibility where one can establish his or her own deadlines, pace, and goals.

What was your worst working experience?

While substitute teaching in a local school district, I constantly had to deal with the bickering of trivial matters among unhappy teachers. It was easy to become discouraged in such an environment, and I had to make a conscious decision to continue doing what I thought was right.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt throughout your career?

The most important lesson I have learned throughout my career is that in order for my students to be fully engaged in what I am teaching, I have to act like what I am teaching is the utmost important thing in the world. This can take a lot of energy, but students feed off of their instructor's energy so it is important to always maintain a certain positive aura in the classroom regardless of external factors.

What unique skills do you have?

I have this internal drive to be original in the classroom. I hate following the crowd or norm when it comes to teaching methods. I am very individualized and have a passion to communicate effectively with my students. I love challenging my students and forcing them to think above and beyond. I find it important to teach to the top of the class and enjoy doing so by trying to be innovative.

What would you consider as your 'dream job'?

My dream job would consist of working in an institute in Montevideo with a supportive team. I would instruct smaller classes consisting of adult learners wanting to better their English skills for a variety of reasons, ranging from personal motives to job promotions.

What are the most interesting aspects of your field?

Interesting aspects of my field include second language acquisition and linguistics. The way a person learns a second language is fascinating, and the linguistics aspect involving differences of morphemes and syntax between English and Spanish give me the advantage of understanding why my students make certain mistakes. Since I formally learned Spanish and am a native speaker of English, I am more readily able to relate to my students.

What are the least interesting aspects of your field?

For me, the least interesting aspect of my field is its history. Although it is good to know where one's field has been and how we have arrived at where we are today, the more important thing to focus on is the here and now.

Please replace this with a question of your own

Are there any English institutes that offer their teachers living accomodations? I will gladly send a resume upon request.

How can potential employers contact you?
