| Bipolar or Schizophrenic? Does my best friend have bipolar disease or schizophrenia or something else? A couple weeks before it "happened" she kept complaining how restless she was. And it was no secret why: between balancing 2 jobs, a 3rd-year college-workload, a play, and an upcoming audition for a major musical festival in Utah- to say she was stressed is perhaps an understatement. And then her grandpa died. This is when I think it "happened". After the funeral, she came back to school and threw her phone away because she thought she was being "bugged". She stopped eating because she thought she was being "poisoned". And when the bus came to leave for the musical festival in Utah, she didn't show. Instead she was found in her room, on her bed, and clearly hadn't showered in days. Her family flew her back home for medical examination. Before they put her on meds, she had a number of episodes, throwing valuable items away claiming they were "evil" (including a lap top). And, for the first time in 15 years of friendship, she has no interest in talking to me. I haven't heard her beautiful voice in a month. Last week when I tried to call, her sister told me she was in the bath tub and moody. An hour later, she was still soaking in the bath tub and still moody. She was admitted into the hospital last night and is seeing a psychiatrist every day, but the diagnoses is taking so long! My question is, do you think she has bipolar disorder or schizophrenia? My gut feeling tells me it's schizophrenia since her uncle is schizophrenic, but both disorders seem so similar. Any ideas? |
