Please give us a short summary of your website?
The site lists job opportunities in Intellectual Property in New Zealand. We will list any job in IP, whether it be patent attorney, trade mark attorney, government or adminstrative professional positions. We are New Zealand's only dedicated IP job search site.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
Knowing the world of IP we realised that many people gain very specialised skills and as a result work in the field for a long time. We therefore wanted to create a job site so that such people can target opportunities in their field effectively.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
We recently launched at the start of April 2008. Since then we have celebrated the first company to take advantage of our introductory offer and advertise positions on our site.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
We wanted something memorable but different. IP Job Shed lets you know what we're about and conjures up the idea of finding something you hadn't thought of in a shed - like a new job opportunity. Plus you might want to shed - i.e. get rid of - your old job when you come to our site!
What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?
No other job search website in New Zealand is dedicated to solely Intellectual Property. Plus our site looks great and is fantastically easy to use!
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
We will grow our site and make sure it's the first stop for anyone looking for work in IP in NZ. We also plan to spread to other countries to help people in IP.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
We've only just started up so its all been time investment so far, with minimal expense. The site is low maintenance though so now its built the time investment is minimal.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would invest heavily in marketing the site and add a lot more features and jazzy effects.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
We like to think so. We've built it so it needs minimal maintenance. But if it gets too much the addition of automatic submission would lighten the load again.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
One unexpected cost was registering an initial domain name and then finding out it was used for something similar in another country. The only other headaches were me trying to learn PHP, SQL, CSS and HTML all at the same time very quickly!
What has been your biggest challenge?
Trying to get the site to look similar in the various web browsers.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Making sure the SEO is in place to give us the best search engine rankings. Plus getting other links to our site out there so the search engines can find us in the first place!
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
Its still early days so I wouldn't like to say. We expected it to not be too much time after the inital build and that is the case so far...
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
The site has been up since April 2008 and development started in February. We plan to keep going with no end date if all goes well.
