With so much talk of carbon emissions, energy efficiency, green energy and so on, an investment in wind energy seems like a very clever decision. Take Roscoe for example - a town of 17,000 inhabitants in Nolan County of rural West Texas. In 2007 Mayor Wortham was elected after campaigning on what was title a "pro-wind platform". Two years on, Wortham explains that 20% of Nolan County jobs are related to the production of wind energy.
This project saw 627 wind turbines erected across a 100,000 acre project and now provides 10% of wind power generation in the US. The project generated a great deal of employment and continues to employ 70 full time technicians on a very good wages for the area, and so in August the area's unemployment rate stood at 2% lower than the Texas state average.
There are many areas with incredible potential for the generation of wind energy in the US due to the vast open spaces and constant wind flows. With many surrounding areas attempting to follow in the successful footsteps of Roscoe and Nolan County this industry could prove very fruitful for the struggling economy.
