I noticed the blog post by Jo Jo about whether Pennsylvanvia having a higher than federal minimum wage would increase unemployment in Pennsylvania and shift jobs out of state. The U.S. Dpartment of Labor provides a nice Chart of minimum wages by state (well a comparison of State minimum wages to the Federal minimum wage). There is large difference in some states, like Pennsylvania. $5.15 vs $7.15 (eff July 1, 2007). The green States are ones with a higher than Federal minimum wage. If the theory is gorrect these states should have higher unemployement rates for unskilled workers and the other states should have seen a shift of businesses that make extensive use of unskilled labor too them. What is your view? Tags: unemployment • minimum wage • offshore • 0 Comments. - Permalink |

Situations that may lead to conflict arise continually in everyday life because of people's reactions to the circumstances or the actions of others. Some conflicts are relatively minor and easy to handle, others are greater in magnitude and require a strategy for successful resolution or else they will create constant tension and lasting enmity. Conflicts can cripple relationships between co-workers, between businesses partnering with one another, between businesses and customers, and between businesses and communities. Conflicts will not only divert attention away from important business issues but can also affect critical decisions relating to the viability of the business. Conflicts in the workplace can create costs due to wasting time, making poor choices, turnover, reassigning jobs to keep warring parties apart, employee sabotage or theft, low motivation, and higher health care costs. Workplace conflict is probably the most avoidable 'cost' that organisations face and the most damaging in terms of poor practice, under performance and waste of valuable management time. Knowing how to manage and resolve these conflicts is important for the overall success of the business. Mahanaim can help you with strategies on how best to deal with conflicts in your organisation and how to set up your own 'internal' workplace conflict resolution services that can be part of your personnel policies or complaints procedures. Areas of Consultancy and Training - Conflict Resolution Basics for Businesses - Conflict Management Skills for Managers - Skills to Handle Verbal or Physical Aggression - Dealing with Difficult People, Disruptive Behaviour and Problematic Staff Issues - Understanding the Nature of Conflict and the Emotions Conflict Can Elicit - Mediation and Negotiation Skills WAR AND PEACE TRAINING: CONFLICT MANAGEMENT AND RESOLUTION Violent conflict has killed and displaced more people in Africa than in any other continent in recent decades. Not only are overt conflicts costly and harmful; but, more insidiously, latent conflict inevitably, in time, corrodes the very core of your organization's functional effectiveness. Therefore, conflict and its management are an inextricable part of the development process; and not only about preventing conflict per se, but the emergence/recurrence of violent conflict. Mahanaim seeks to strengthen the mechanisms & processes, as well as the capacity of actors and institutions, for constructive conflict management. Consultations and advisory services in this area will develop diagnostic and prescriptive tools to assist organisations, governments, businesses, and civil society in formulating strategies and programmes that will strengthen their capacities for managing and resolving conflict.
