As solar panel producers "Evergreen Solar" shift assembly line jobs from Massachusetts to China, many started to worry about the fate of Evergreen's facility in Midland Michigan. Despite receiving tax breaks and more than $58 million in state funding to set up their factory just outside Boston, the company has come under increasing pressure to move to a location which offers a more competitive environment. One in every four jobs in Washington depends on trade. However as world trade falters during the current economic crisis this may not continue to be the case. Washington may make things the world wants to buy, but there is growing competition from every angle. China continues to grow, and produce increasingly cheaper goods. Not only that, but Washington also faces rivals to its port services as Asian cargo is gradually shifting to East coast and even Canadian ports.
