Negotiating Job Conditions - The Tricks!

09/20/09 10:19

New Yorkers are notorious for being "hard" and "pushy". If you're going to last in the big city you need to know how to assert yourself, and a job interview is no different. Here is how to survive that awkward interview moment and negotiate the best terms with your new employer:

1) Be prepared: Know about the company, and know what your position is worth. If you know your facts and figures, know what a comparable position is paid and be able to express your worth to the company then the ball is in your court.

2) Be Fair: Be straight up and honest from the outset. Make rational and justified requests and they will most likely will be met with a rational and just response. Simply be clear that you wish only to be earn the equivalent of what your colleagues are paid for comparable responsibilities. In this case being prepared and knowledgeable (step 1) will greatly assist you.

3) You are an investment: In these tough economic times employers are looking for minimum staff with maximum capacity - you need to convince them of your worth. If you can portray yourself (and the role you wish to fill) as an investment and asset to their company rather than an expense they won't want to let you get away.

4) Play the figures game: Although it can be challenging if faced with a blunt or direct question never reveal an exact figure for what you are currently being paid or what you wish to be paid. Instead suggest a range in which you can negotiate bonuses, benefits, time off etc.

5) Know your limits: Why are you at this interview? Is it just for a raise or is there something about this position you want? Is it a step up? Will you learn from it? You must know what the position is worth to you so that you can calculate what you are will to sacrifice for it if it comes to that. Try to be flexible and take everything in to consideration - educational opportunities, benefits, growth prospects etc - not just salary.

6) Shift the focus: Take the heat off dollar signs and instead try to negotiate a win-win situation. If you want this job you must be confident that you have something to offer them and that if they choose you together you can make it happen and find a solution that suits both parties.
